This I do not find hard to believe.
I also love Mel Brooks. He got his Presidential Honours this year. Pity Anne Bancroft wasn't around to share it with him.

It's a pity that Anne Bancroft isn't around any more period. She's brilliant. I was amazed when I found out they were married.

Films I seen recently and liked are Dear John and Clash of the Titans, both of which I was quite surprised I liked as neither are things I consider to be my 'type' of film haha. I also adore Alice in Wonderland and want to see it again and again

I think it's cause I am more of a storyline over special effects kind of person anyway. But like Clash of the titans was double the price to see in 3D you have to wear those silly glasses (most of the time I am looking at my reflected eyelashes and working out when I next need to pluck my eyebrows lol) and there were only a handful of moments where the 3D was actually used. I think it was cos 3D was an afterthought with the film but still haha I just don't see the point I have just realised I did go off on one there slightly sorry hehe

Unfortunately so many films with 3D coming out will add the 3D as an afterthought. Avatar is one of the few out recently that was actually filmed in 3D with 3D in mind.
The upcoming Warlord of Mars is supposed to be filmed in 3D. It's going to be Pixar's first live action film and is being directed by John Favreau of Iron Man fame.

I recently watched Avatar on DVD. I think, all though this film was good, that it was filmed purely to show-off 3D effects which were obviously lost on DVD.

FoC, I think you're right. I relate it to Fern Gully, but the same idea permeates. What makes Avatar something special is that it does something new with the medium and brings a new way of making movies.
Which is the same thing both Star Wars and The Matrix did when they came out.
Elphie, One of my big gripes about Independence Day is the aliens wouldn't be running software that would be compatible with a Mac virus.

But will Avatar achieve the same status as Star Wars ? I will still quite happily watch Star Wars again and again, but I not sure I would rewatch Avatar anytime soon.

I've watched it three times so far. Also, the whole reason I bought the DVD was because my wife wanted to watch it again. That almost never happens in her case.
I'd agree that Avatar is no Star Wars, but how many of the people who saw Avatar would normally go see a sci fi/fantasy film? Also, how many would watch an animated flick? I'd say it's 75% animated and yet, it's now the highest grossing movie ever.
Is it a great movie? No. Is it an amazing film to watch? Absolutely.
It made Pixar go back and reevaluate how they were going to approach Warlord of Mars, which is to be their first live action film. Avatar is a game changer. Do you have to like it? No. Personally I think Titanic was about 2 1/2 hours too long. My wife for about five years thought it was the greatest film ever.
