I'm not very fond of this episode, the first part of it was just an ordinary episode but for some sequences. I love the counter-surveillance bit, it is very well displayed, amazing. Lots of locations there, have to lcheck them properly Big Grin

I think Malcolm it's just like me, he's not good at telling jokes... Tongue

I agree with YourFutureMuse, I like Zoe and Will love story, very well written, nothing extraordinary, not far-fetched...

Why Ruth was going through Adam's bag? It's not very much her, is it? It was funny though.

I think she thought it was a present left for her....or maybe a very nicely wrapped package of material for her to analyse. I have no doubt that there have been stranger things left on Ruth's desk!

There is commentary on the UK version DVDs. I haven't made any notes when listening to it, but here's a few things I remember:
- Commentary done by producer Andrew Woodhead and the writer (can't remember his name.)
- The writer's idea with this episode was to explore what happens when the enemy is not from outside, but from your own side, i.e. MI5 vs MI6.
- The Zoe/Danny B story comes from fact that many real life spies are in relationships/married to other spies that work with them, as only they can truly understand the nature of the job.
- Lots of praise for the actor that played Harakat. The actor is apparently a huge cricket fan so loved that part of the performance and story. He was also in Bend it like Beckham.
- They loved the Harry/Mace scenes and much praise for both actors - two heavyweights slugging it out which makes for great viewing. The scenes in the club significant as it reflects real life in that much politicking and wheeling and dealing is done in these clubs in real life.
- The episode also meant to establish Adam as the new leader, hence the focus on his strengths.
- The surveillance scene took about six days to shoot, and was extremely difficult to do as it takes place through Central London.
- It is apparently a very accurate reflection of how these things are done in real life. However, real spies would normally abort if they realise they are being followed. They sometimes use teams of over a hundred people to follow someone.
- Real life spies can tell from which country/foreign agency their pursuers are, or at least who trained them, by the approach the pursuers adopt in their surveillance and trailing. Each spy agency has its own approach to these things.
- Lots of love for Malcolm, he is a "great character" and knows everything.
- The bench scene with Adam and the deep throat source was copied from Oliver Stone's movie JFK.
- RPJ is a great runner, very convincing in portraying a sense of urgency.
- Lots of praise for the last scene between Harry and Mace, and in particular for Harry's stance against the establishment for what's right. It creates the impression that a person of Harry's calibre would have progressed much further up the ladder if he had been willing to toe the party line.
- Through Danny we get a glimpse of the emotional impact political decisions made much higher up the chain can have on the ground.

Thanks, Silktie. Don't know why my dvd set doesn't have commentaries -- now I'm bummed!

RE: Episode 3 Discussion [rewatch} - CONDOR - 21-04-2010 01:19 PM

Have just watched this episode fabulous!! love the way that 5 got one over on 6 with the surveillance, however would there really be so much CCTV coverage?
I have to confess that Ruth is growing on me, she tries so hard to fit in.
I was waiting for a bang at Lords, either the cricket bat or car, also was expecting the tell tale red laser dot to appear, but no as usual the director did it just right, no fuss, though I would have expected more mess from a bullet in the back of the head.
There were some great quotes in this episode, and hate to say this but I might have to change my Icon to Malcolm as we appear to have a lot in common apart from just the name.
I loved the Harry quote , having a dig at the U.S. and the comments about everything east of the Hudson being a space on the map with "here be dragons" written in.
I really don't trust Will, and can't believe that Zoe is telling him so much I am sure that this will come back to haunt her! (personal opinion as I haven't seen any later episodes). Poor old Danny, he really needs Tom right now and I bet if Tom posed the same question to him as he did in episode 2 the answer would be different, in respect of "the right thing".

RE: Episode 3 Discussion [rewatch} - Beatriz - 21-04-2010 05:13 PM

It's nice to read the ideas of a person who watch the episode for the first time.

I agree Zoe tells Will too much, they haven't been together for so long...

RE: Episode 3 Discussion [rewatch} - CONDOR - 21-04-2010 05:43 PM

MM I bet you are all having a good giggle at my theories, knowing the answers already, but thank you Beatriz.

I also thought Zoe had more taste. Still an interesting point that Mrs Condor raised was that being an agent and your life being so restricted, once you do find somebody, a lot of the usual "niceties" go out of the window, and your are probably more inclined to be less inhibited.
I would have thought though that relationships must be a strange thing as you lose all of the fun of "discovery", as your department has done the "donkey" work in the vetting process so there is nothing left to learn about somebody. A point highlighted well in this episode, post coital on the sofa, when Zoe shows off how much she knows about Will.
Will is showing an unhealthy interest in Zoe's work, in fact as he works for the press I would have thought this relationship would have been frowned upon. One thinks that Zoe is going to find her "bedroom confessions" the subject of a major magazine article and that will be HER off to Narnia!
All speculation folks I really haven't a clue just drawing my own conclusions.

RE: Episode 3 Discussion [rewatch} - Beatriz - 21-04-2010 06:12 PM

I didn't mean that! It's just different the perspectives that you get when you see the episode for the first time or it's your 2nd, 3rd... time. It's good to have different points of view, that's all Smile
I don't deny it's fun to know what's going to happen Wink

RE: Episode 3 Discussion [rewatch} - CONDOR - 21-04-2010 06:25 PM

Don't worry Beatriz I was only joking I do see your point
