Just finished watching AABA last night. I have to say that you certainly wouldn't watch it with your Gran on a Sunday afternoon. What a bizarre film. A sort of comedy about homosexuality and incest. An adult version of Peter Pan they say. The best performance certainly came from PF (Bunny) even though Alan Rickman seemed to grab all the headlines, for his 5 minute performance and half a dozen lines. You are never quite sure whether Bunny and Hugh Grant have had a relationship in the past or are having one still. Quite why Bunny loves Hugh Grant is a mystery though, with all his many foibles. I think PF steals the show here and I love the moment he scrapes his chair across the floor accidentally when Hugh Grant is giving his speech. As I say, an odd film. I do wonder why PF went for this role, if not for the money, then maybe it was the pull of Mike Newell who had just made Four Weddings and a Funeral.

I managed to get hold of lots of fairly rare PF stuff via a P2P site...Laughter of God, Hawking, Northanger Abbey, The Vice series 4 ep, Holding On, Kavanagh QC ep...now I just have to find about three weeks free to watch it all!!

Well, I bought the Bunny/Meredith relationship as much as I bought anything else in the movie! LOL! I took it as an acknowledged by both yet unrequited love from Bunny. Bunny is the Stage Manager, the caretaker, if you will. He needs someone to take care of and Meredith is the guy that needs the most care. Bunny is to Meredith as Tinkerbell is to Peter Pan. If a bit forced on the part of the writing.

Oh, I think you have it: a paycheck, the director (although he had worked with him at least once before in The Indiana Jones Chronicles), the general casting is incredible (Hugh Grant aside), but also I think PF has a penchant for odd pieces. This movie probably looked very intriguing in script form, but didn't quite pan out in actuality. Although I am not sure PF gives a rats patootie about commercial sucess. Bunny is a simply a great role. I think those high artistic ideals he says he had in his early days that allowed him to pass up film star fame is still alive and kicking.
But I'm gushing....

Holy tap dancing Jesus, picard! You are way ahead of me!
Northanger Abbey is the first time I was aware of PF. He is a very good Henry Tilney. PFs slightly off of center acting style is perfect. He is slightly dangerous as Henry. As a film, it is a very, um, odd interpretation. They went for a slightly OTT Gothic interpretation which is true to the novel but it is very 1987.
I am not aware of ever seeing Hawking here in the US, but I would love to see it!

The cast list is quite amazing so the script must have really captured them. I can't believe there was much money to go round for high salaries to entice them.

Its a American colloquialism for potato, usually of the sweet variety. It means a rats "sweet potato" AKA a rats sweet ass. And here I am trying to be delicate.... I should know better.
