Oooh, that's a good idea. It would be unlike the writers to give us a happy ending too easily... I mean, if they got a happy ending after years of glances, then Ruth telling him that she couldn't go out with him again, then being framed for murder, then faking her own death, then after Harry's suffering because she moved on and because he 'caused' the death of her 'husband.' That would be too easy, I don't think the Spooks Writers are done with the suffering yet.

Still just me not wanting them to get together?

I have always wondered about your reticence in seeing Harry and Ruth together, Nitrus. We know you like Harry - why would it be so terrible to see him happy for even a little while?

Dodgy Nitrus is still being silly. What's wrong with them? (Apart from that you doubt we'll get a happy ending because Spooks isn't exactly a happy program)

Nitrus is our (much esteemed) contrarian -- every forum needs one.Cool

I'm not sure I want to see anyone from R's three-year hiatus turn up. It would move the story backward (as H says, she's home) and H&R have enough issues in the here and now to deal with. Adding more obstacles would be tantamount to the writers saying, "It's never gonna' happen.":suicide:

Spooks is not for happy endings, that's it's thing. That's what it does.. if you go around matching people up, it becomes a show about HR and their struggle to stay together while working together and "oh no, what if they kidnap Ruth to get to Harry?" (something which already annoys me).

Series 5 Spoiler: show
Call me sour grapes, but I liked it when Ruth left the first time, that ending of their relationship was perfect.

I totally understand what you're saying but sometimes an unexpected twist happens in a long-run show and the writers/producers have to allow it to run it's logical course. NW and PF may have instigated the H/R relationship; however, it's now an established (and writer recognized) sub-plot and you can't just let it drop out of existence or those characters cease to make sense to the audience.

If spooks had stayed on it's original path, Harry Pearce would still be a minor character and the show would have lost its (arguable) mainstay.

There's a validity to that, lwhite53. The show hasn't changed all in bad ways. I've often said that there's a poignancy in Harry being the man left standing.

I agree with Nitrus in so far as had NW not wanted to return at any point, I would have been 'happy' with how that storyline was resolved. It certainly gave the first half of season 5 its edge.

But bringing her back isn't just about Harry but about what she brings to the team. And I think it's understandable that in having her back, there is a strong expectation and believability in getting them together. How many chances have they lost already? How many have they lost? Good grief, let them enjoy what little they have.

This argument is completely based within the canon of Spooks so I'm not saying anything that breaks character. (!!!!)

Yes, I agree with that, too. Had NW not chosen to come back, the resolution of that story line both made sense and worked within the show's esthetic.

Nitrus, you make it sound like this type of storyline i.e. spooks trying to have a life outside the service, has not happened before and should not happen. What about Tom and Ellie or Tom and Christine? What about Adam and Fiona? Even Zoe and Danny and Zoe and Will? We have had these sub-plot storylines before and they have for the most part worked and complimented the main plots. The show will never become just about H/R even if the writers do get them together. They would never do that because Spooks is plot driven.

Spooks is the better for having Ruth back and I think it adds another layer to Harry's character when she is around him. Basically H/R are good for Spooks and it is not just die-hard fans that say that. We all like a little bit of romance dont we; the idea what we will end up with the one that we really love in the end, after all the rubbish we have to put up with day in and day out?
