Who else doesn't believe that Vaughan's had a "stroke?" [It IS Spooks, after all. Don't believe anything].
Great ending! Something really scaring Lucas...I love it!

But I agree about the name "John." Imagine if Vaughan had said: "Viktor..."

Loved the episode, of course.
But I don't understand how Nicholas Blake was with Nightingale. At the beginning of series 8 it was Blake that warned Harry about a meeting in Basel. If you're involved with some secret group like Nightingale surely you wouldn't go and tell Harry Pearce and simply hope he wouldn't find out.
But it was an excellent scene.

Well, I was dubious about this new series, with so many cast changes and everything but i was glad to see that the spooks sparkle is back!

I'll start however with the things I didn't like so I can end on a positive note Tongue

1)The unbelievable fact that for the majority of this ep we are expected to believe that a major operation was conducted with only 3 members of staff on the grid and 2 in the field.

2) The fact that it seemed that Ros and the HS and the whole Nightingale storyline was brushed over so quickly at the beginning - the whole build up of series 8 for what exactly? A mention of the baby HS would have been nice too Wink . And the twist with NB home sec seemed to be unbelievable, I know it was supposed to be a shocking twist but it didn't make sense to me.

3) Self pitying Harry - should have got a grip sooner - what was all that resignation crap about Tongue.

I also felt that the witty, fun and oneliner parts of Spooks were still missing although I did love the new HS's mumsnet comments and Harry's interactions with him Tongue

I also loved Big Grin:

1)As a Harry Ruth sceptic I actually loved their parts, I think it was perfect that Ruth said no - it would have been so easy for the script writers to just have her fall into Harry's arms in a cliched ending but that is so not spooks or HR.

2) The fact that there is not only one unbelievably attractive male on the grid but two!! Hello Mr Brown Wink.

3) The new Beth character and the whole switching from the private sector thing was an interesting introduction and I do think I wil love her. (not as much as Ros obv. but I am making do Tongue)

4) Lucas back to his asskicking best Big Grin

5) The very interesting ending Big Grin Another twist in Lucas's past yay Big Grin

Y'know, sometimes you just have to go with whatever is happening because it works for the ep. I think you're right about Blake warning Harry about Nightingale and then being part of the group being somewhat inconsistent, but they needed it to happen this way so that the "pile on" effect for Harry (Ros' death, Ruth's refusal, Blake's betrayal) brings him to the edge. The ep certainly seemed to do that, in spades.

Amazing episode! I've even forgotten to drink my glass of wine... I'm not really enthusiastic about the new HS and Beth Bailey. She's like a little girl playing with a new toy.
I really enjoy all the PF's scene and I'm curious about Dimitri. I hope we can see him a little bit more next time.
BlushI have a request: I haven't understood Sophia Myles' lines just before Lucas gave her the money. Is there anyone who can write them here?

I'm rather happy that they've introduced a new Lucas twist. He never really held much appeal to me before. His previous back-story seemed to drag on way to long for my liking. So he was captive in Russia, we get it. His 'thing' with the witch from last series (Tongue sorry YFM) didn't help my opinion of him much. However i think he might grow on me a little more this series.

He was however outshone by Beth in this episode. I have a feeling I'll quite like her. Smile

Harry: "Make the most of it. Reintroduce slavery and invade Belgium."

This was a favourite moment for me. Not just because of the line, but because Harry was off-kilter and it was a little un-PC, and the look the new HS gave him, like Harry was a little mad, then the HS paused and said "I do hope we are going to get on Sir Harry." Wonderful !

As for the plot. It was a little daft to be honest. But hey ho. It worked. I did like the fact they used the EMP bomb to end it. Also do we have missiles in the Thames Barrier?

I can't quote it perfectly but she says something to the effect that she just come out of deep cover as a penniless prostitute.

Just watched the funeral scene again. Do we assume there was nothing left of Ros to bury? There was no coffin and they all just left the church afterwards.

RE: Series 9 Episode 1 discussion - lwhite53 - 22-09-2010 02:49 PM

Yeah, I'd imagine it was a memorial gathering as opposed to a funeral service.
