RE: [Spoilers] Sir Harry Pearce - Silktie - 06-02-2010 06:57 PM

Harry looked really good at the beginning of season 2, the hair is not too short and he looked particularly good in that waistcoat whilst chairing the Cobra meeting in 2.1. Also, in 2.2 he reminds me a lot of George Smiley when he's meeting Khaldun in the park, with the coat, newspaper and umbrella. All he needs is the hat!

I thought it a little weird that Harry would chair the Cobra meetings, it's not as if he's the MI5 DG, and there would definitely be more senior people than him at the meeting. But still, he is a natural leader and seemed to be quite at ease chairing the meeting.

In 2.2 I liked the way he almost immediately respected Khaldun, and that he did get him the passport he promised him. And he really is adorable when meeting Ruth for the first time with that lame joke.

Silktie, you missed my Avatar I had up earlier in the week. I had Harry in his grey waistcoat from that episode. I intend to take a snap of my favourite Harry moment from each episode of the rewatch and mix my avatars up a bit.

Could you really imagine Harry and Ruth ending up "nearly" together after that meeting? Bless Harry though. When he does try to be one of the gang, cracking jokes, it just flops totally.

Sorry I missed it, I hope it'll make a reappearance at some stage.

Actually I thought there was a hint of something in that first meeting. It's all in the way Harry says 'If only' after Ruth said 'Bugger the Home Office.' It's as if he's thinking that there might be more to this woman than he had imagined. Also, he's never as dismissive of her as he is with other new people, like Sam, whom he clearly views as little more than the teagirl. But with Ruth he actually gives her the time of day and listens when she has something to say. But yeah, I grant that my view may be coloured by the fact that I saw season 3 first, and then caught up with the first two.

I dont know whether there was something romantically there but clearly Harry was different with Ruth than other members of his staff when first meeting them (well the meetings we have seen throughout the series.) He certainly doesnt really respect Sam or Helen until she died. Why are they so different to Ruth, perhaps more attractive and younger? Something a middle aged man might go for over brains surely?

I also found it odd that only Harry seemed to know that she was starting on the Grid on that particular day. I definately think he was different with her than any of the other women on the grid. He also seems to be a little more patronising with the other women (except Ros aswell perhaps) another instance is where he sees nothing odd in hugging either Sam or Zoe when it is found that he is not dead in the Eerie episode but wouldn't do that with Ruth. Harry certainally is a baffling man!

Someone on FF made a fic suggesting that Harry and Ruth had met prior to 2.2, which to me seems like a fairly plausible idea as to why he initially treats her differently.

Yes. That would explain a lot. Or perhaps he merely liked the look of her Big Grin

RE: [Spoilers] Sir Harry Pearce - Nia M - 07-02-2010 06:45 PM

I can't really see Harry being like that to be honest.

That's an interesting point, he keeps himself physically away from Ruth. There's that distance. I guess it could be that if you really like someone and dont want them to know that you do, because you think they dont like you back, you try to avoid contact with them so they dont think that you do (does that make any sense?) But usually when you do that, it is obvious because by treating that person differently, there must be a reason for that?

RE: [Spoilers] Sir Harry Pearce - SPOOK91 - 07-02-2010 07:38 PM

Yes, I think Harry might have been aware that it was pretty obvious to the rest of the Grid that he like Ruth either that or he felt that if he was affectionate towards her that they may construe it in that way and he wouldn't want to make her feel awkward perhaps; especially being the boss too, she could hardly work with him effectively if he was making unwanted advances at her.
