It is unfortunate I think that there is literally nobody left besides Harry and Ruth from before she was exiled if Ros doesn't make it to series 9. Malcolm could have proved very useful in getting the two of them to see sense, I can't see Lucas doing that somehow! Although what could be amusing is Tariq as he does seem to have a little bit of a hero worship thing going on for Ruth; maybe that will be explored a bit more, I can't see Harry being too happy with that!

Yes I agree the Ruth Tariq relationship in the next series will be interesting. I guess it depends on whether they bring in another desk officer as to how that will pan out. I am not even sure that Lucas fully realizes how Harry feels about Ruth. The H/L relationship is still pretty distant and there are a lot of trust issues. Ros of course knows all about Harry and Ruth as she was partly responsible for Ruth having to leave. If she survives though I still cant see her trying to push H/R together. Its not what she does. I have a feeling either Harry or Ruth are going to have to make the move themselves.

I agree with your feeling, Tea Lady! I think one of them will have to make a move and get closer, I'm not sure if somebody could help them get together... Poor Malcolm had the other way round effect in series 5... (Ruth is not the same so I think she won't mind dating Harry and everybody knowing).
I think they can now have a great oportunity to have a more mature relationship... They used to have their own fears and ghosts about relationships; now they have another different ghosts (guilt) but a great oportunity to leave those behind and start from scratch.

I think H's initial reaction to Ruth may have had something to do with her coming from GCHQ. I think he probably didn't trust her from the get go, believing that she had been placed in his unit to spy on them. So he's being careful about how he acts around her, not wanting to give her any ammunition against him/them.
I would agree with lwhite, I think he was distrustful of her at first, but then she almost immediately impressed him by finding Khaldun in 2.2. He seemed to be uncertain as to how to handle her, and only made things worse by trying to sideline her in 2.3. And when she once again comes up with the goods, he is forced to revaluate his opinion of her. Ironically, as soon as she seems to be winning Harry's trust, Ruth betrays them in 2.4. I wonder if Harry ever found out that Ruth had been the leak?

Yes, I agree that H knew but, based on the deleted scene, he decided to let Tom deal with the issue. Given that Ruth had played an important role in 3 ops, to date, H may have figured that it was worth the gamble to keep her around, hoping that she would become one of them. I think after 2.4, he was probably intrigued by her and her formidable intellect.
