I think they feel they have to raise the bar every series, in terms of making it being bigger, better and more cutting edge, hence the agents running around with weapons, humongous explosions, and more and bigger death scenes. And all of this is good, from an action perspective. What has gotten lost, though, is the human perspective of the spooks themselves.

To use the EERIE exercise Tomsdouble referenced as an example, even though that entire ep took place on the grid, everyone was involved and the interactions between and among the characters was some of the best interpersonal exploration we've ever gotten of the spooks. S9 needs to re-kindle that interplay and allow us to see the spooks as human beings rather than as one-dimensional vehicles for the plot.

Oh, and as to Alan Rickman as a guest actor -- YES, YES, YES!

I totally agree. I've just watched that episode and is very moving even though I knew what was going to happen, and lots of characters interaction, they had no other option Tongue
Series 8 lacked of human side, only in some episodes got to know more about the members of the grid, but little compared with other series...

Which may be exactly why the H/R shippers didn't get much in the way of growth in that relationship -- none of the characters really grew much in S8.

:sniff: poor Ruth and Harry. Well, at least they are currently getting more growth than most of the other onscreen relationships! Hopefully we'll continue to see more HR in season 9...

Yes, I think we've seen more Harry and Ruth this series than other characters, so we "can't complain" much (HR fans I mean).
I thought another guest star I'd like to see is Colin Firth in series 9, I love him (but unfortunately the budget would be a problem)

Bring back Jools Siviter!!! but the rates he's getting as House... mind you, did anyone espy the lovely Hugh Laurie in the Victoria Wood Xmas show last night ; with another favourite of mine Alan Rickman (he can guest star any time...)

Colin Firth would be great as a HS!! Smile

I thought that too, but we would have two, Alan Rickman and Colin Firth Tongue
And I'd like Robert Glenister to come back so three for HS. Perhaps Colin for PM and Alan for Head of MI5 Big Grin

Now that sounds cool Smile

A better editor...or at least someone who spots the errors before each ep is finalised.
