HL was only in two episodes, but it's funny because I always remembered him as being in more. That's his stage presence for you!

I'm not sure what the pods are for, maybe they do a body scan. I did think though that when the real HS announced that the UK threat level was being increased on Saturday, and was standing in front of the Home Office, that there were pods behind him. I may see if I can get a snap.

They scan for tracking devices and the like. We know from later episodes throughout the series though that they're hardly foolproof.

The pods in the real Thames House are x-ray gizmos, like the new airport security machines that all US airports are supposed to switch over to. They check for weapons, etc, all the way down to your skin. On the dvd commentary for this ep, Howard Brenton was crowing about having been the writer who managed to use the "getting stuck in the pods" gimmick because it really could be used only once. He loved that he snagged the moment for Jools.
