Am I the only one to think that "John" assuming the identity of Lucas North requires one hell of a suspension of disbelief?? According to Lucas, "John" had only to have a "Face to face" and he was in. Surely fingerprints would have been taken earlier in the application process and checked later to confirm the applicant? If this isn't the case then it seems that Blockbuster have a more stringent application process than the securit services??!!!

I've been wondering about that myself!
Either there's one hell of an explanation the writers are gonna give us, or MI5 just has the worst background vetting process ever!! If people like Beth and Deery got knocked out of the process on their first tries just because their psych evaluations didn't work out, how the hell did Lucas/John go this far and end up Section Chief????
If it was just a simple face to face, then MI5 really needs to work on their security! I got more background checks/paperwork/questions when I was enlisting for the military than Lucas getting into MI5!! Heck, my college has better security than MI5 at this rate, even my 5 year old brother's daycare center!!
Either MI5 is just about to become the laughing stock of the whole of the entire intelligence community OR the writers have something up their sleeves.....

This being Spooks, I think the will be a big cliffhanger at the end of 9.8, with no real answers. I don't think anyone will die at the end, that will be saved for series 10, once the writers know who is available. Although I can't see Lucas making a return mostly because RA will be busy with The Hobbit (filming starts in Feb, similar time to Spooks ?) and Strike Back. I think that the writers may just invent a completely new storyline, like Harry's kidnap in 7.8, wasn't related to SugarHorse or anything else in series 7, it was all about some stolen uranium which hadn't been mentioned previously.
By the way Tea Lady love the new avatar, can't believe you can change it so quickly !

You may be right HellsBells, the last scene could be another story altogether. I have a feeling that this cliff-hanger is going to be far worse than last years. Basically because HN had already let the cat out of the bag somewhat.
Glad you like the new avatar. I have to say I am quite proud of it as well. It's a bit Dirty Harry like (no pun intended.) Wasn't much else to do at 2am this morning when I was a little unwell and wide awake.

My latest (straw clutching) theory is that John was recruited in university by the mysterious drug dealer bloke and taken to Dakar for the express purpose of being trained and groomed as a fall guy for the embassy bombing. Drug Dealer Bloke was in league with Vaughn and his meeting John in the casino was no accident. The real Lucas was already in Dakar and threatened to expose what they had done. maybe Vaughn had tried to recruit Lucas as his future man on the inside but he was too goody-goody so he had to die. Their plan B was to get John to assume Lucas's identity and infiltrate MI5 in his place. They must have someone on the inside who doctored the blood type/ finger prints/ DNA and dental records to get their fake Lucas through vetting. Lucas's arrest in moscow scuppered their plans for 8 years as he was beyond their reach but once Vaughn learned of his return he showed up and started his little mind game.

Based on the trailer and what some people claim to have seen being filmed I think the ending will be:

After last night it doesn't look that my belief from the start of this Season that Ruth would be the traitor is right but there is something not just right about her character.
I think that she may very well be leaving the show along with presumably RA.
Some say that it is unlikely teo of the major cast players would leave together but it might not be Kudo's decision - it could be that both actors don't wish to reenew their contracts - always assuming there is an S10.

Ok, here is what I can't quite get right in my head. All information suggests that the final showdown is on the top of that building and involves at least Harry and Lucas. There are some reports that Harry gets blood on his shirt filming this scene.
Well, if this is the showdown, what were those scenes which were quite openly filmed last June (I think it was June.) There were loads of photos taken by fans and some phone footage on youtube. It clearly shows Beth and Dimitri shouting "Lucas" and then shooting someone in a car park. That person does not get up. That person is wearing a hoodie though.
Now, is this so someone thinks that Lucas has been shot dead, but it isn't actually Lucas, it is faked? If Beth and Dimitri shoot someone (who can only be Lucas surely) then how can Lucas have a face off with Harry on the top of that building?
This is why I made the earlier comment that I think we are being played here.

I've been pondering this one as well. Do you suppose that the real Lucas North isn't actually dead. Did they check for a pulse after John strangled him? Maybe it's him on the roof with Harry?
EDIT: Just watched the trailer again and it's definitely "our" Lucas.
