RE: What books are you into?
I agree with you about George Smiley. I saw in your earlier post you like Martin Cruz Smith's Detective Arkady, as I do. I also enjoy the Dalgleish novels by PD James.
As for Le Carre's later books: I found have found some a little disappointing: I am a great fan of George Smiley. That is probably why some of his later writing has not captured my heart as much as the Smiley novels. I liked The Constant Gardener. Without wanting to be over critical, after all: "Those who can't, criticise" .... A most wanted man had many elements of Le Carre's writing that I enjoy: the arrival of a stranger about whose credentials we are unsure about, an idealistic lawyer determined to defend her client and the 'old school' banker. I enjoyed reading the book: but for me, the characters and plot were not as well crafted as in the earlier Smiley novels. I noticed that Len Deighton's: Game, Set and Match and Hook, Line and Sinker have not been mentioned so far in the reading material for Spooks fans. That's another author whose work I have enjoyed in the past. |
