Hi Spooks Fans!

My name is Kathryn and I'm currently trying to find contributors for a short internal film to be viewed by staff here at The Shine Group. We are creating the film to showcase the values and impact of global Shine output through audience experience and connection and one of the things we’re interested in is finding super-fans of Spooks with an extraordinary passion for the show. I came across the forum yesterday and was delighted to read many great things about the series!

The film we are making is intended to be a light-hearted and honest portrayal of our audience's views of the shows we produce to highlight the dedication and creative excellence of those involved in our productions, and to show our staff why we do what we do as a company.

We'd love to hear from people who are SUPER fans, what is about the show that has inspired you? What makes you a super fan? Anyone with an interesting, quirky story to tell - Tell us how Spooks has changed your life!

Please get in touch if you would like to share your passion for the show on film and to let our staff know what it means to you as an audience.

I look forward to hearing from you all!

Many Thanks

Kat x

In addition this is not limited to people from the UK, we would love to hear from as many people as possible - Worldwide!

Thanks again!
What do you do if you celebrate Christmas or Hannukah? Is New Years Eve a big deal for you or do you stay in with some champers and loved ones? Do you do gifts or give money to charity? Especially interested in stories from those who celebrate traditions not included already, and from those who don't do holidays at all.

When I was sitting at the desk of my 2009 summer job I found myself thinking about Spooks, the eighth series was going to be airing in a couple of months and while I was a member of communities for many of my interests, I had not come across such a one for Spooks fans which I felt I could become a part of. It was at that moment that I set about launching Spooks Forum, a community that I could nurture and grow into a haven for fans of my favourite show on television.

Now that show is drawing to a close it feels appropriate to look back fondly on the time we've had with the show and indeed the many hours each of us has spent on Spooks Forum.

There's been laughter, excitement, anticipation, secrecy, curiosity, disagreement, controversy, drama and even tears. But in amongst all that has been the people, it's the people that make Spooks Forum what it is. I don't think you could put together a more diverse set of people if you tried, if we all met up somewhere you would never have guessed that there was something we all had in common, something we all treasured. There's something very beautiful about the ability to connect with people through one common interest and grow to love more than that about them.

Some of the relationships established here will last a lifetime and that is something that I can be incredibly proud of, and so can you. I want to thank each and every one of you for what you have contributed to this community and I hope the community has repaid you.

It is clear to me that after Spooks has ended this place will never be the same again. However, you may rest assured that it will still be here years from now, standing as a monument to a brilliant show and a incredible community of people. If there's one thing I can say for sure, it is that even though Spooks is over, we have an enormous amount of re-watching to do together and I can't wait to read what generations of new fans have to say about old episodes.

I could get emotional and even shed a tear over the times we've had together in front of our TV screens and I could write pages about what this place means to me. But for now, let's leave it as something wonderful, something that was never said.

I happened on this article by Stella Rimington, the former DG of MI-5, about her upcoming espionage novel Rip Tide in which she talks about the need for "fiction to tell the truth about espionage."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books...spies.html

To while away the time before S10 airs, I have been reading le Carre, beginning with The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and moving on to the Karla trilogy.

In her article, Rimington brings up several novelists: William Le Queux, Graham Greene, Erskin Childers, John Buchan, Somerset Maugham, and Frederick Forsyth. Of course, there are others. I though it would be nice to have a thread where we can talk about all of them. If you have read, or are reading, an espionage novel, I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.

I would also like to hear what you might have to say about the truth in fictional espionage. Does telling the truth take the fun out of it? There is a poll to that end.

The concept is simple, you submit facts that are approved/rejected by others users according to the guidelines and then once they are approved they can be voted up or down by other users.

You can sign up straight away and start submitting/moderating/rating facts! I've already submitted my ones from the Facts thread we have on here.
Feedback/issues are greatly appreciated too and can be communicated in this thread or through the site.

Hi there! I have a quick question for everyone- does anyone know if there are any Ashes to Ashes or Life on Mars DVDs available for sale in the U.S.? I wanted to check them out from the library in my area, but they're not available there. So, I am curious about whether they're being sold in any stores in the U.S. (I unfortunately don't have Netflix so that's not an option at the moment ).

I am interested in both of them b/c I heard they're good (and I'm referring to the BBC Life on Mars not the USA version). Plus, I like Keeley .

Wow, I guess my quick question got turned into two paragraphs. Oops.

Thanks, Nitrus, for letting me canvas for blatantly work-related information

I am part of the Knowledge and Thought Leadership team in an international commercial consultancy practice. I am currently looking at renegotiating the licenses for a range of online resources, and I'm hoping SF members can help me build up a picture of experience of, and attitudes towards, e-books. I am interested in your experience of using e-books, whether you buy them, borrow them from a library, download them from an online environment, or access them in the course of your work or study.

I do have a short list of questions for you to consider, but even if none of these seem relevant to your experience of e-books, I am still interested in hearing from you. The questions are not designed to test you or catch you out. If you don't have an answer to one, or any, of the questions, that's fine. Let me know your opinion, or your experience, outside of the questions anyway.

1. Do you prefer to access e-books as static documents (eg. PDF or EPUB), or as manipulable content (eg. Apple's Enhanced Editions)?

2. Do you print e-books, or parts of e-books, where possible?

3. What is your experience of digital rights management (DRM)? This might include restrictions relating to your e-book, such as a prohibition on printing or saving the file; a time limit on the amount of time before the file expires or is deleted from your hard drive or online account; or restrictions on the number of times you can access the e-book within a specific timeframe.

4. Have you made use of software to allow you to overcome DRM? (This is not a trick question: free and legal downloads are available to help you do just this)

If you have experience of obtaining e-books via any system supported by OverDrive, I would be very interested to know how you feel about the service. [If you obtain e-books from a public or academic library (including a school library) in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, you are almost certainly doing so using a system provided by OverDrive.]

I look forward to hearing your views and experiences. Virtual confectionary (and actual gratitude) to everyone who responds Please feel free to PM me if you would rather not have your response show up on a public forum.

Being in Australia where Spooks is screened 12 months after its UK screening, I'm hanging out for my S9 DVD.

Problem: I'm going to receive it mid-semester when I should be studying ...

Solution: Write an assignment based on Spooks, so viewing becomes 'research' not 'entertainment'. (Ahh, the mind games we play with ourselves ...) I'm doing an MA and need to put together a short anthology of poems and thought I'd try and track down as many references/quotes from Spooks as possible and make my theme something like "Classical poetry references in British TV series Spooks".

Unfortunately, I don't have time to re-watch all of the series to date, so any help would be much appreciated.

So far I have, with help, found:
S3.7 Abu Nuwas quoted by Ruth
S5.2 Walt Whitman quoted for Colin’s funeral
S5.2 Rupert Brooke from ‘The Old Vicarage, Grantchester’ by Harry
S7.? Spike Milligan ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’ discussed by Harry & Qualtrough
S7.1 John McCrae ‘In Flanders Fields’
S8.8 Schiller “Alle Menschen werden Brüder” (Ode to Joy) by Harry
S9.1 reading unknown, as I’ve not seen this yet

There are also these Shakespeare references, which I reckon count as poetry:
S5.4 Shakespeare (Measure for Measure) by Malcolm
S2.5 Shakespeare (Henry IV) by Ruth
S8.? Shakespeare (King Lear) by Sarah Caulfiel

Can anyone add to this list?

Terror Threat Levels

Right I'm probably going to get into a load of trouble for this (sorry Nitrus et al)but here goes anyway.

The following was allegedly written by John Cleese and the the views expressed are not, necessarily, those of FATBOY. Apologies too to all those nationalities mentioned, being English myself, I too am "a little miffed".

Enjoy

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats
and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon,
though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A
Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940
when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from
"Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a
"Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588 when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the
Bastards" They don't have any other levels.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror
alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are
"Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire
that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the
country's military capability. It's not only the French who are on a
heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout
loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels
remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to
"Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher
levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only
threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy.
These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy
can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to
"She'll be right, mate". Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!', "I
think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is
cancelled". So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final
escalation level.

As a lot of us seem to be interested in Kudos related productions, I thought we should have a general thread to note any new series being produced, so we can keep an eye out in the future for them.

The BBC announced this week that a new spy drama has been commissioned:

Morton, 8 x 60 series, written by Frank Spotnitz made by Kudos Film and Television

"Meet Sam. A spy. A hunter. And herself hunted by an enemy more ruthless and determined than any she's ever known. Sam has been running from her past her entire life but when she returns to Mobius, the organisation that employs her, and begins to pursue her pursuer, she will discover the only way to escape that past... is to confront it. This is the story of a spy with a bull's eye on her back, a human target unable to trust anyone at any time, even the man she loves. She is, quite literally, running for her life. Morton is a smart, complex and contemporary spy series."

The new year has begun already here in Australia, and as usual since I don't care for it much, I spent the lead-up hours watching Spooks with commentaries, watching Diversity on youtube, and here on this lovely forum. I turned on the tele just before midnight and the radio station that was doing the official soundtrack to the fireworks display for Sydney and happily watched my beautiful city light up.

Was just dreaming about what it would be like in London for nye celebrations... so, what's nye like for you?
