Big issues in Season 5

Hi there, I was just wondering if anyone can help me with a story I'm writing. I'd like to know the big issues that were happening in the year Season 5 was released. Were any of the episodes from S5 running close to a real-life issue taking place that year?
I'd really appreciate any feedback, either taking place in Britain or its neighbouring countries. Thanks.

Environmentalists threaten to blow up the Thames barrier, the extent of Adam's problems finally come to light, Malcolm spies on the Deputy PM and Harry is forced to order an explosion that could kill both Adam and Ros.

This is probably my joint fave episode of this season along with 5.3. I love seeing where Ros might have been earlier in her life (she has some hilarious moments in this episode), RPJ turns in one of his best performances on the show (I love how cold he gets as soon as he leaves the sister's house) and the plot is great. It is a very believable premise, the job of caretaking a war criminal just for the present, despite all the terrible things they might have done - that's been done a few times for real. And the use of the old school spy stuff is just brilliant.

I think this episode is a great example of a story that stands alone. It's clever and suspenseful and works really well.

Am I the only one who thinks Ros' old beau is a real drip and that the wife and Ros are so much better than he deserves?

Aaaaaaaaand we're back! It's pretty self explanatory, we watch an episode every week and then chat about it. We're following on from last year where we left off just before season 9 started.

Does Ros really join the team in this one? Malcolm certainly makes an effort with her. How is Harry coping? And some of Adam's politics come to the fore.

So this wasn't my favorite ep, as a totality. Didn't really feel like the "threat of the day" was terribly new or interesting.

However, I was happy with some of the character development, most especially the H/R relationship, the Ruth/Ros enmity, Zaf/Ros (who seemed to get along pretty well), and the hints that Adam might be having some issues.

Especially appreciated the writer's overt recognition of Harry and Ruth -- H asking R to dinner (loved that scene) and the dinner itself (the grand tour). And absolutely loved Ruth telling off both Ros and Harry re thermobaric bombs.

Ros (sort of) joins the team (after fighting against them), Juliet gets hurt, we meet Nicholas Blake for the first time, Jo holds her own and Zaf fights dirty.

What did you all think?

I must admit I haven't re-watched these eps yet, but there are some brilliant lines on this episode that stay in my mind, even though it's been a while. The idealist in me loves the little monologue Rowan delivers to camera urging his dad to do the right thing - it's basically a succinct summary of why I think everyone who's eligible *should* vote (in those countries that allow it) and I'm not ashamed to say that those lines bring a lump to my throat every time.

I also love what we learn about Harry - he truly believes in the democratic process as being the best there is, there remains a touch of the idealist in him. I also love him quoting the Rupert Brooke poem and the shot of him walking out of the complex at the end is marvellous.

My favourite scene is the one with all of them facing off downstairs in that dungeon, it's a terrifically well written scene and the set up for these episodes is outstanding, one of my favourite synopses of the whole show. The conspiracy theorist in me loves it.

And Ros trumps everyone by producing that disc. She comes (kind of) good and I can see why Adam hires her.

As to why Juliet does the kind thing for Harry and tells him bluntly about Ruth, I honestly think she cares about Harry, whatever else happens later. I think she respects him and she's known him a long time and this is possibly the only altruistic thing she does on the show.

I always thought that they'd make a good couple, I'm sure they lived together for a while didn't they? I know that Razza and Miranda are married in real life so I suppose that influenced my thoughts on the subject... did anyone else ever think this?

Series 5 for me has always been the series where eveything changed.. with various characters departing and various characters joining, it felt like a lot of things changed, not only with storylines but with the way the show was shot.

Then again, it wasn't until Series 6 that the threaded storylines were brought in..

Episode 8 - Agenda

This is the episode where an extremist christian recruits ex-army men to bomb islamic targets.

I thought the storyline of this episode was very very interesting because it dared to mess with religion, particularly.. what is considered to be the "main" religion of the UK by many people, and using that religion portray a "necessary" evil.

I thought it was very bold of the writers to take a storyline like this to the screen.

What do you think?

Adam's breakdown has to be my least favourite storyline of all series. It was such a shame to see him slowly crumble through the series. I was actually suprised when he returned for series 6, I thought it was only a matter of time before he was fired or killed.
