New Year's Eve - what's it like for you?
Happy New Year everyone! Smile

The new year has begun already here in Australia, and as usual since I don't care for it much, I spent the lead-up hours watching Spooks with commentaries, watching Diversity on youtube, and here on this lovely forum. I turned on the tele just before midnight and the radio station that was doing the official soundtrack to the fireworks display for Sydney and happily watched my beautiful city light up.

Was just dreaming about what it would be like in London for nye celebrations... so, what's nye like for you?

Still got 7 hours to go before we reach it here in SA. It's hot as hell, and the clouds are building up, so we may welcome it with a spectacular thunderstorm.

Off to a friend's house in a few hours to celebrate there. We probably won't stay until after midnight, though. People here tend to get really irresponsible about driving drunk, and by staging their own fireworks shows in the backyard. So we'll try to be home before all that happens to ensure we get back alive, and in time to prevent some idiot in the neighbourhood from burning down our house or blowing up our dogs.

I find people fall into one of two camps when it comes to NYE. They're either keen as hell or totally not.

I'm in the latter camp. My favourites have been ones I have either worked and partied afterwards or ones where close friends had a house party. Everything else is bollocks.

I had a nice quiet one alone and it was great.

RE: New Year's Eve - what's it like for you?
Ours are quiet. We don't brave the roads. My husband calls it "Amateur Night." We let the kids stay up until they (we) can't take it anymore and crack a bottle of champagne at midnight. After the hub-bub of the holiday season its nice to do it quietly.

I have "done" loud and exciting New Years Eves. I did Times Square NYC in 1990-91 because, well, I felt I had to do it once when you live here. It was just before the Persian Gulf War air-strikes began and there were a lot of servicemen on their way over-seas who told us what was coming. Sure enough, a few weeks later....

And then we went to Amsterdam in 1998-99 of which I remember very little. Just joking. Wink I remember it all, esp. the fireworks. Soooooo many fireworks! I love fireworks and would have set off a few of my own but even I thought it was completely crazy! We high-tailed it back to our B&B past the bon-fires and (stupidly) kept our window open until a bottle rocket nearly entered through it.

That was the only time I have been in Europe for NYE. Do all the cities do fireworks like that on NYE?

Happy New Year to those on the other side of the International Date Line!

Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet [Spooks];
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

I just read that supposedly in Sydney out celebrations are much bigger than most cities. More than 1.5 million crowd Sydney's foreshore tonight compared to Paris' 100 000. When you consider our relatively small population that's damn scary. No wonder some of us stay in!

RE: New Year's Eve - what's it like for you?
London always has a pretty good firework display. Well it looks good on the TV anyway. The thought of actually going there and back on the packed trains, does not appeal one bit.

I don't mind NYE. Most years I manage to stay awake and are either with family or Mr TL depending on whether he's working. Tonight he will be home and I am cooking beef in beer with fries and a red cabbage side for us. Sounds great. Mr TL looked a bit scared though when I told him, as he's more of a beans on toast man.

Anyway, hope your dogs don't get blown up Silktie and a Happy New Year to you all. x

New Year's Eve for me?
Like any other night I suppose, stay up until 1am, eat chocolate, watch the Soaps on TV and argue with my mum over who's going to switch all the electrics off before we all go to bed Tongue

I always watch the Fireworks display on TV though, makes me wish sometimes I lived in London, and I don't get stupidly drunk on New Years Eve, unfortunately a lot of my friends do and when they do I can't even speak to them so I don't spend time with them Wink
I've never really seen the attraction of getting drunk on NYE Wink
But I spend it with my family, mostly my dad and my sister Smile
Tonight though I'm in the middle of a Spooks Watch on Series 8 (which started when got it as a christmas present haha) so I'll be watching 8.5 in peace, Big Grin

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope 2011 will be a great year for everyone *Sends out hugs to all* Smile xx

Yeah, you guys do it on a pretty large scale! Just heard on telly that Sydney apparently spent 5 million pounds on the fireworks display alone! Heck, that's Zimbabwe's budget for a year...Tongue

The fireworks in London was pretty great. I loved how they used the London Eye in the display. Here in SA I think it's only Cape Town that really does a decent fireworks display as a city. Maybe that's why so many people try to do their own.

Thanks, TL, us and the dogs got through unscathed. Happy new year to all.

Does anyone have any interesting resolutions?

I don't know about 5 million pounds....5 million dollars might be closer to the number.

To be honest the City of Sydney makes a hell of a lot of that back in various ways. Plus it's a HUGE tourist draw, this is peak tourism season out here. Plus the hospitality industry does a big night and it's worth it for local businesses.

NYE and the following day are traditionally the really hot days too, they were probably the hottest days we've had so far but it has actually been a pretty mild summer so far. So they got lucky.

And Australia/New Zealand are the first in the English speaking/western world to turn the year. For those who want to be on the leading edge, that's the place to be. Outside of the fact that it would be really cool to go to the beach on New Years Day. I still have two feet of snow!

I think that it was mentioned that there were 1 million people in Times Square last night. No fireworks though.
