How do you calm down a spooky and excited, hiper, energetic horse?? while riding it.

If my horse gets spooky I tend to jump off and lead her for a bit, speak soothingly to her. You could try lunging the horse, trot and canter, for half an hour before riding, gets rid of excess energy. Just don't tense up when you feel the horse get fizzy as it make them worse.....easier said than done.....
