I always liked the idea of Bond having a good friend in Felix Leiter. So instead of apparent allies (CIA/MI6/FBI/MI5 etc.) always having this air of (not-so) friendly rivalry about them - what about a bona-fide friendship (rather than the usual predictable MI5 man meets pretty CIA liaison totty). It needn't be a male friendship thing either. Wouldn't it be great if Ros (who has been seen as cool and ambivalent towards the yanks) actually had a very close American (or Canadian) friend who was in trouble? Or vice-versa. The over-riding national interest would be put on hold whilst the true level of friendship was tested.
