I wonder if Harry caught Ruth off-kilter with the marriage proposal. As others have said it was a quantum leap from keeping her at arms length and not taking up her offer of comfort in 8.8. And yes, I do think it's real, men do actually behave like this. I had a close but platonic working relationship with a guy for a couple years who just announced one day that he had left his wife for me! In the end I turned him down because moving things on so drastically placed me under too much pressure to make it work even though previously I thought it was what I wanted.
I wonder if Ruth was a bit freaked out by his proposal. He is quite emotionally needy at the moment after Ros' death and that's too much for Ruth who is still facing her own demons. Harry should go for babysteps with Ruth I think. They will get there in the end I'm convinced.
