I thought they were trying to make it look like Alec and Beth had known each other previously. I can't quite see that being in a romantic way though. Maybe he had something to do with her training, back in the day. Also, poor Tariq having to put up with Alec putting his feet on his desk.

I just assumed Beth was giving Alec a hard time because she continued to Lucas Lucas, and he told her not to. She still believed in Lucas as a good person at this point.
