Here's a thought: maybe Ruth's disgust with Harry's self-doubt in season 9 is not really about him perse, but displaced anger because that leaves her as the only "dead inside" one in the equation. His self-doubt is very much an indication that he still has a piece of his soul left, while Ruth seems to doubt this about herself in season 9.
