But they are still hostages . . . to each other and to their past. They need to free themselves from that relationship before anything else can happen.

I agree with Beatriz, they need to talk/argue it out. If they can't say what they really mean, no matter how painful, then they are, indeed, just repeating the past. And as we know, they've been here before.
