Lucas could indeed be full of regret when he remembered the life he could have had, so it wouldn't be too unlogical if he wanted a 'normal' life, after all the suffering he had indured for his country, they at least could have given him that! It's "a struggle for heaven and earth. Where there is one law: fight or die. And one rule: resist or serve."
