Just popped back in from the cold to add my two penn'orth.

How about the phone-hacking scandal? A newspaper gets hold of sensitive information by illegal means and suddenly journalists start turning up dead. Section D are tasked with tracking down the killer, keeping the remaining journalists alive and at the same time trying to prevent the paper publishing what it has discovered. The hacking victim is innocent of the murders but some other mystery person is determined that the story never gets into the public domain.
