Where Ruth is concerned perhaps she is worried about the gossip, but when she was after John Fortescue, the amount of people who knew about that (Sam and Malcolm) and she didn't appear to be all that worried by them knowing.
Perhaps her saying that is the writers attempting to give them that little bit of happiness and then making it awkward for her departure. |
