My reading of this is that Malcolm grasped for something that might summarise Adam and how good he was (both as a person and as a colleague) and realised that there really really wasn't one word to do so. I agree with JHyde. Malcolm had great respect for Adam, and I think liked him as a person, especially after that season 6 episode in which he stuck with Malcolm in the field. I wonder if Malcolm also felt some guilt for Adam's death, due to him contradicting Harry when the boss told Adam he wasn't going to make it and he should ditch the car.

The reaction to Lucas is just Malcolm struggling to put his feelings into words.

Exactly. He's an Englishman of a certain age - he's hardly going to gush, even for Adam. Malcolm praises, but he's usually pretty short spoken about it when he does.

I thought that Malcolm liked Adam which is why I thought the word he picked rather low-key. What was wrong with brilliant or amazing? Admirable just seemed like a word you would use about someone who you were supposed to like but didn't. I guess he is just being Malcolm!
