Manipulating the Government/Political System
One of the things I find most interesting about Spooks is how much the team actually end up working against the government or manipulating politics.

This seemed to be happening a lot in Series 4. They are actively trying to manipulate the election and the extreme right wing political party in one episode. Actively going against orders to covertly working with Harry when he's dismissed.

Thoughts?

Always love your country, but never trust your government.

RE: Manipulating the Government/Political System
You're right, there is definitely a strong element of that. I think they are trying to establish through this that the team, and Harry in particular, is not fond of politicians in general and that he would go against the government if they are planning morally questionable activities. However, I feel that the writers are not consistent on this aspect, as there had been times when Harry followed pretty horrendous orders from the Home Secretary, as seen with the bomb in Tehran in season 6. Perhaps as long as he believes it to be in the interests of the realm heis willing todo pretty much anything.

On the other hand, how many times have we seen the politicians working against MI5? Oliver Mace is a case in point,
Spoiler: show
as well as in season 6 when the Home Secretary actually orders the team's assassination.

So in the end we get the idea that both sides (MI5 vs politicians) are tolerating the other as a necessary evil.

Plus just like with kids, sometimes you have to choose your battles.

RE: Manipulating the Government/Political System
I think Harry's got better at picking his battles with politicians, and he has got better at trusting them, particularly the current home secretary, although perhaps Series 4 was a little too heavy on the anti-political side.

DANNY - Placements all over the shop. Back up vehicles, chopper support if we need it. Bomb disposal with a signal jammer for Mary’s trademark remote control blasts. And Tom here’s doing the catering. Mate. You are so covered.

I noticed that as a theme with Series 4.
