Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Since the movie adaptation is getting closer and seems to be a subject of general interest, I thought it time to start a thread in which we can discuss the novel and its various adaptations.

To get the ball rolling, here is a new teaser trailer for the upcoming movie with a stellar cast including Gary Oldman (George Smiley), Benedict Cumberbatch (Peter Guillam), Colin Firth (Bill Haydon), Toby Jones (Percy Alleline), Ciaran Hinds (Roy Bland), Mark Strong (Jim Pirdeaux), & John Hurt (Control).

+1 rep point for the first poster who can match all of the following to their character and provide the reasons behind the code-name: tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich-man, poor-man, beggar-man, thief.

Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet [Spooks];
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Here's another trailer:

I'm getting excited. Although trailers can be misleading, they do seem to indicate that they captured the mood of the book quite well.

The new trailer is wonderful. I'm still annoyed Australia won't get it for a full month after the UK but it's better than I previously thought. There are different dates on different websites.

I'm really hoping this film does good things for Gary Oldman, who has to be one of the best actors going around.

I should start reading the book... We don't have a date yet, here in Spain... Sad

RE: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
I haven't read the book nor seen the tv adaptation or listened to the Radio 4 version but am really looking forward to the film. The bits I have seen/listened to have left me with the impression of George Smiley being a quite hypnotic character, decptively mild with a razor sharp mind and a ruthless character. Maybe I should get round to reading the book after I've ploughed through the Booker longlist Smile

RE: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Unfortunately it seems those of us outside the UK will have to wait even longer to see it:

Well, rats! However, the article does seem to make sense of it all. At least from a marketing and awards perspective.

S'all right. I can be patient!

The film was shown at the Venice festival, and is getting rave reviews. Gary Oldman in particular, which I'm really happy to hear. Seems they did get it right. Yahoo Yahoo Yahoo

RE: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
I really want Gary Oldman to get some award nods for this role, if he's as good in it as I think he will be. He is an extraordinary actor who doesn't play the celebrity game and doesn't get recognition beyond being the favourite actor of some of the other best actors going.

I can't wait for this. It has Australian release in November, earlier than previously advertised.
