[spoilers] Lucas and his tattoos

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
I can't help thinking that the writers thought the tattoos would be a good idea initially but are now having problems with the continuity/make-up. Also we have had no explanation in the series what any of them mean. From my VERY limited knowledge of Russian tattoos I thought they all had particular meanings.

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
Some of the phrases are Latin? (Dum Spiro Spero) and Greek (Gnothi Seauton)The writing on his arm is Russian. Omerta is Italian I think. The iconography I would have to further investigate.

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
The 8 onion domes bear the three barred cross of the Russian Orthodox Church according to Wikipedia and the chest tattoo is based on William Blake's watercolour etching Ancient of Days. The мир on the base of his spine is Russian for "peace"

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
The ship tattoo on his right arm can depict life. A travel through rough seas or enduring tough times, with struggles along the way, but they have made it in life despite everything they had to go through. I got this off the internet too. Just a guess but indicative of Lucas's experiences.

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
Maybe they used permanent marker for his tattoos during the water/electric torture scenes! If they could manage that then surely we can have a Lucas shower scene?

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
I've been quite fascinated about all the information that people have provided about the meaning of Lucas's tattoos. When I first saw them I wondered about the wisdom of a spy having all those tattoos.

Do you think it could be a little insecure/unwise for a person who needs to go 'under cover' as part of their job to have their body 'marked' in such a way? I could have missed something, but we don't really know the reason why the Lucas character has so many tattoos, or do we?

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
The implication in 7.1 is that he got most of them whilst in the Russian prison camp, not before. That they were part of fitting into the culture. The substance of some of them would seem to bear this out, for example the Blake.

Many thanks to Tyger for a terrific signature

RE: Lucas and his tattoos
Lucas had to get the tattoos to fit in with life in a Russian prison - "Tattooing is part of the culture in there. You don't do it, you don't belong. You don't belong, you're dead."
