New Doctor Who Discussion

A great actress, a beautiful lady, she'll always be my favourite companion of Dr Who. Many magic moments, but few better than with David Tennant when he hugs her and says "My Sarah Jane." Yep, still getting teary.

RIP Elisabeth. Thanks for the memories. You'll always be "Our Sarah Jane."

[A Cousin]

As with many of you, Sarah Jane was my first Companion. You never forget your first! I was the same age my daughter is now. Back then, Sarah Jane was a bit of an anomaly for female TV characters of the time; a resourceful and intelligent feminist journalist stow-away. Fantastic role-model stuff!

I only just recently saw her in School Reunion with Tennant. With K-9 Mark III, too!

R.I.P Ms. Sladen. Thanks for sharing your talent and skill. You were great!

I just finished watching the first episode and freakin' WOW. Scary and sinister as all get out with some wonderful lines and fantastic acting from both companions and Alex Kingston. loved that the fish fingers and custard made a comeback, as well as the killer 'The legs, the nose and Mrs Robinson'. Rory had my favourite moment with River in the tunnels below, when he recognises that Amy's story is very similar to River's, with the Doctor's knowing.

It also looked bloody amazing. They have a crack team putting it all together, that's for sure.

I must admit, I wonder how I'd feel about really young children watching the show as it is now. But I'm not a parent, so I guess I don't have to worry about that yet.

I enjoyed it, but I always do! There sure were a lot of Americans with guns though. Way to perpetuate a stereotype! Guns AND Tricky Dicky! Things cannot go well from there....

Death Valley was nice to see. It is an incredible place. Seems a long way to go for just a few scenes though? I assume there will be a bit more.

The flirting between the Doctor and River Song is a lot more prominent, isn't it? I am suspicious that we are being led down the garden path re: their relationship. They are very much making it look like they were partners. I enjoyed the tete-a-tete as she was futzing with the TARDIS controls behind his back.

As for young children watching it, my five year old son watched with me last night. It did get what I thought was a little too frightening and he did stare at the screen in wide-eyed horror a couple of times, but he did not hide his face, jump into my lap, and had no bad dreams. However, my now 10 year old, had he watched it, would probably have had a hard time going to sleep without a light on. So it depends on the kid. I suppose it is not much different than when I watched the Daleks from behind the couch when I back in the early 70's. It doesn't feel very realistic watching it now, but it certainly did back then! Mine seem to know that it is "just" a TV show.

I wasn't overly impressed by the plot for this episode. Then again, it's a two-parter, and typically one episode of the two-parts is always worse, so hopefully this was the episode. It just didn't really make sense to me. However, I did spend half of it laughing at the one-liners so maybe I missed bits of the plot doing so...

Both my children aged 6 and 10 are sad because as well as Doctor Who they are huge fans of Sarah Jane adventures, the spin-off on CBBC. Elizabeth Slayden and John Pertwee were the only combo I really bothered watching (or like A Cousin, peering from behind the sofa).

Yesterday's episode I was rather lukewarm about, but hope with it being a two parter it will pick up next week. Husband and children loved it though.

It starts in Oz next Saturday - can't wait. I adore River Song - Alex Kingston is magnificent.

Felt exactly the same!!
It just didn't seem to make much sense. My children aren't interested in watching Dr Who, but I have thought for some while it is too scary for younger audiences, and I'm not sure they would understand what is going on, I'm not sure I did either!
Still think Matt Smith is doing a fantastic job.

Felt it was perfect as always, right on top form and easy to follow!

Can't wait for Part Two!

Besides, the lovely Mark Sheppard guest starred, that alone was enough to make it perfect for me considering I met him just two months earlier at the LA Convention for Supernatural and he was totally giddy about his part in this two-parter!

All great from my point of view, but then again, I've always had a fond connection and understanding of the crazy minds of these Doctor Who writers!

And as for kids viewing this, I really think it depends on the child, because when I was young, I was into horror stuff and watched a lot of things that many would now consider inappropriate for children and certainly plenty of R-rated movies, but they never bothered me or scared me in anyway. So my opinion when it comes to kids viewing is that it really just depends on each child. Although I do understand that with Steven Moffat at the helm, the show has become darker than it was, but that had always been Moffat's style, he was always more adult with his writings so maybe kids would not be used to it. But personally, I love it!

I don't know what I think about Matt Smith anymore... he's brilliant in all the other things I've seen him in but as the doctor hhmmm I am unconvinced which is odd because I did like him to start with.
