I think Matt Smith is brilliant and every bit the great successor to David Tennant (my personal favorite) and all the Doctors before him. He's got that perfect eccentricity, quirkiness, and thirst for new adventure and knowledge that all the Doctors before him carries, and he also brings his own uniqueness into the role just like every Doctor actor.

To me, Matt's portrayal of the Doctor is one that is of an old being who has a very grandfatherly quality about him, and one who is now resigned to his fate and found himself more connected and more fond of his companions because of the experiences he has had before, especially as Doctor #10 has affected him now in this new regeneration. The Doctor is learning, and he's changing, and in a lot of ways, he is becoming more connected to these human companions and more emotional and affectionate than he ever was.

I smile every time I see Matt on screen and I adore his relationship with Amy. I think his acting is every bit as good as anything else I have seen him in, perhaps even better in a lot of ways, especially with the brilliant Steven Moffat guiding him as the head writer.

I've never had issues with Matt, I've loved him from the first moment he uttered his first line and I have no doubt I will remain loving him til he says his last.

Yeah I love Matt too. He's wonderful. I know people for whom he is actually their favourite.

As to the show being darker, I think this is true. But Moffat always has his eye on the children - he regularly talks about what he thinks kids are scared of and goes from there. I do mostly think that what kids don't get goes over their heads (even the bright ones, they just ask questions if it really bothers them) but mostly it's OK.

I don't understand what there wasn't to 'get' in the last episode. The Christmas special had some problems but I honestly thought Saturday's episode was one of the best of the new season.

One thing in don't understand is the relationship between River Song and the Doctor. When we first meet River Song (in the episode with the library) she knew all about the Doctor but he didn't knew her. But now she says they are going in opposite directions in time, but there both appear to travel in time, so that confused me. Also I didn't understand why Amy hadn't seen the Doctor for two months at the beginning.

The relationship with River has certainly re-set this series. It is much more flirtatious. I just kinda go with it though.

You make a good point re: Amy not seeing the Dr. for two months. The end of S5 was Rory and Amy yelling good-bye to earth out of the TARDIS door after their wedding, wasn't it?

As for the plot, I ended the episode feeling like all had definitely not been said. I am just going to wait it out and see where it goes.

I really like Matt Smith. He has a Mad Doctoral Student feel to me that is somewhat different from any other doctor I remember. I like that he seems so much younger than any other Doctor. He has this childlike playfulness but also an ability to get very dark and foreboding (almost menacing) in the blink of an eye. But I really only have any past experience with Tom Baker and Peter Davidson. Eccleston and Tennant I have only seen in re-runs a la "The Best Of..." as BBCA sees fit.

I'm really hoping that the second part will clear up all my confusing (concerning Dr Who at least!) and that the episodes will probably be better watched together, more like a special.

I paid attention to what you said HB. I want to watch the library episodes again sometime this week and if what River said isn't explained further when I see the second episode I'll find out exactly what she said all the way back when.

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
New Doctor Who 6.3 - a pirate adventure! Who doesn't love a pirate adventure? Now this was one for the kids and the kid in all of us. The episode had a nice twist in it. Was scary but not too scary. And, well, I admit that Hugh Bonneville can give PF a very good run for his money in my book. Blush Of course Mr AC takes the mickey at the end, "Oh, great. Now we have SPACE pirates!"

As for the series through-line, it did not make much of an appearance this episode. When it comes to the new Dr Who, I seem to prefer the one-off episodes with a lot of pastiche involved. It just seems what Dr Who should be. Not that 6.2 wasn't pastiche-alicious. I found that one to be great fun for that reason. That said, my kids have been enthralled with the idea of the little girl beginning to regenerate at the end of 6.2 but she did not make an appearance in this one. Mr AC's theory is that she is a regeneration of the Doctor who has gone back in time to stop his regeneration into her for some reason. (Mark my words, he says. Wink )

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
Did you notice that, when she was regenerating, the little girl's hands are those of a man? Yes, I also think it's the Doctor. Or are we seeing the return of The Rani?

I'll be wrong, of course, and I don't mind.

Mr AC not a fan of the Sanctaphrax series of books, then? Wink Steven Moffat has read them, for sure: all caterbirds dream of caterbirds. I'm just saying Smile
