RE: Ashes to Ashes
HAH! I remember when that first aired. God, I love Catherine Tate, she's seriously one of my heroes.

I also love the Lauren sketch with Tennant's Doctor that aired on Comic Relief, also available on youtube.

RE: Ashes to Ashes
I have to admit, when I first watched the finale I was a bit WTF is going on, but I've just watched it again and Gene has just broken my heart :'( Poor Gene!...

Anyway, I shall let you go back to your convo about Phillip Glenister in Catherine Tate now.

DANNY - Placements all over the shop. Back up vehicles, chopper support if we need it. Bomb disposal with a signal jammer for Mary’s trademark remote control blasts. And Tom here’s doing the catering. Mate. You are so covered.

I had to re-watch bits of it just to hear the explanations again, there was some amazing acting by PG and DM.

RE: Ashes to Ashes
You know what, while out on my run, I actually think this both makes better sense of Sam's coming back to '73 but also complicates it too. Wasn't the whole point of Sam going back to '73 that he knew he was dead? Nelson's whole 'when you can't feel, you're dead' stuff?

But, if we're going to get all Catholic - Hell is where Keats is going. Purgatory is where Gene is and all these others who have been dead for indefinite amounts of time (or is it limbo?) and Paradiso is the pub?

I love it!! I also love that in this theory, that makes Gene, Virgil. He is a modern day poet, so it's quite fitting.

The more I think about this, the better sense it makes if you think of this as Dante's La Divina Commedia. And I do, because I'm a dork.

I really, really need to go back to study.

It will definitely be on my list of locations, including Spooks ones of course Smile Anyone going? Tea Lady? Wink

I'm still waiting for the subtitles to fully understand the dialogs, for now I agree that Keats would be some sort of Devil and Gene GOD? (kidding), Gene storyline is the most difficult to understand in my opinion.

A bit off topic, I found out that John Simm and Philip Glenister are to star a miniseries called "Mad Dogs", they are filming it in Majorca Smile More info here and here.

Well as the pub is in Bermondsey I don't think I will be going unless I actually have Gene Hunt there to protect me !

I have just watched it again with Mr TL and he noticed that when Jimbo was taking Shaz, Chris, and Ray to the lifts, Jimbo had to enter a key code on the door to get through. Well his key code was 666, if you watch him put the numbers in. Mr TL has that sort of key pad at work.

Also I am kind of thinking now that Gene didn't get to save Viv's soul which is why he was so upset and Jim got to him and took him to hell. Also at the end of episode 6 (I think) when those two Manchester detectives came up and Gene whispered something in his ear when he was on the floor, shot, I assume Gene told him he was already dead and was going to hell.

As to why Gene is staying in purgatory, my theory is that he gets to be who he always wanted to be i.e. Garry Cooper in High Noon. He's not the skinny little kid that no one cares for. If he goes to heaven then maybe he will have to revert to the skinny kid again.

I assume it was God who put the bottle of whiskey and the car booklet on Gene's desk when he got back as a sort of thank you for saving four souls.

RE: Ashes to Ashes
Great call on what he said to the dying manc copper TL.

Can we assume that Gene first came to this world as a PC and then got promoted eventually to DCI? Or did he immediately assume his "Gary Cooper" persona?

I really don't know about that one. I would guess that he immediately became "Gary Cooper" and that he had left the skinny copy persona behind. When he was left lying on the ground, beaten and weak, the skinny cop came back for a second though. Maybe.

RE: Ashes to Ashes
I'd go along with all that. I loved it when Alex was looking at the whiteboard and said it was all going down at High Noon.

I mean, don't get me wrong I hate Gary Cooper, but it made so many little things suddenly so funny.
