RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
Awwww, that's so sweet! (I'm not going to watch it to see though - I'm still too emotionally abused from the last time I saw it Sad Maybe sometime in the future...)

DANNY - Placements all over the shop. Back up vehicles, chopper support if we need it. Bomb disposal with a signal jammer for Mary’s trademark remote control blasts. And Tom here’s doing the catering. Mate. You are so covered.

She does say it then. Good grief, that is heartbreaking.

Yep. Just watched that bit again.
It should count as self harm re-watching it. It's so painful. (But so good!) (Not in a masochistic way. Tongue)

It is painful, such amazing acting by them both. It is actually the most painful episode of any tv drama I have ever seen - I've watched episodes that make me cry every time I watch them but I still can watch them, 8.1 is too painful to watch for me.

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
Admittedly a few years ago when i was younger (It's amazing how much you can grow up in a few years) and Doctor Who 2.13 first aired, i couldn't re-watch the end of that for ages! I cried all the time. (Silly when i think about that now compared to some other things i've seen).

Since then i think Spooks 8.1 is the only thing i've seen that's so painful. (If i'd seen it back then i would still be crying about it now. No doubt about it).
Besides, i needed to toughen up over it to be able to make my H/R videos with it in. Big Grin

Yes, I'm with you Silktie. He knew that she was freaked out with everyone in the office knowing about their date and he was giving her time to sort out her feelings, but he wasn't going to give up. Then Cotterdam and Mace happened immediately after Havensworth and he ran out of time.

Why did she have that reaction to the office gossip? Because it's one thing to dream about something but quite another to have everyone know that's what you're dreaming about, I think. Maybe getting what you want is potentially the first step toward losing it? Ruth was so bottled up, at that point, that she couldn't see the difference between friends wanting the best for her (Malcolm) and idle office gossip. Too sad!

In s8, things have definitely changed. She understands that life is short (she's seen so many people die) and what you thought was a secure life can be taken away in a moment. I think she's ready to live her life, as opposed to fantacizing about it. Carpe diem, Ruth!

Lol!Yes, and Harry too. She's willing now, mate, don't let this opportunity pass you by. (With apologies to Juliet.)

But back to the roof scene. I've rewatched for the first time, and I like it the more I see it. Just before Harry abruptly starts talking about Ruth's choir, they're both very upset - you can hear Ruth's voice quivering as she tells Harry they have to make the talks work - and Harry looks at her for a beat before changing the subject. I think he realised they were both about to lose it, and was trying to ease her pain by talking about something that has positive connections for her. Unfortunately, the Beethoven the choir was singing just brought the discussion right back to the painful reality.

I love the quote "All men are brothers". It's one of best bits of the piece too. And it's philosophy that Ruth definitely subscribes to.

Yes, but my problem is with H being upset in such an overt way -- it just doesn't ring true for him, imo. Ruth works in this scene . . . it's Harry I have trouble with.
