I'm still trying to understand what the point was, of Vaughn giving Lucas that suitcase full of old tat, photos, and gambling chips. It' only purpose seemed to be, to remind Lucas that he had a love of his life, which clearly he had forgot about for 15 years, until he saw that photo of Maya.

Also, we don't seem to know John's surname yet.

Also Lucas/John's house seemed to have very little in it. When Lucas picked up his post on his way downstairs in 9.4, and dumped it casually on the side, whose name was the post in? Wouldn't Maya think it a bit odd that all the post coming to that house is in someone elses name? Unless all the post coming there is in John **** name. ??

I was thinking more along the lines of Brothers in Arms. It looked to me like Vaughan and Lucas might have been either field officers together or Vaughan was an asset Lucas was cultivating or Vaughan was a target. Or did they know each other prior to Lucas joining the service? Maybe Vaughan is the reason Lucas is in the service, thus the A level access file, and those reasons are not based on the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

I have to say, it is quite a mystery that Kudos is protecting very well.

The facts so far:

Vaughan is blackmailing Lucas for the Albany file due to pressure from "them."

Another life, probably by the name of John, was contained in that suitcase.

Lucas was an ex-gambler? Poker scams with Vaughan?

Vaughan has an A level file with MI5. (IMO, if its in there - Harry knows about it. The file, I mean)

What/who Lucas was in the past is so horrible that he has to destroy another mans life and not come clean to Harry.

The Chinese want Lucas.

Anything else?

I think you have covered most things there A Cousin apart from the past love affair with Maya. This seems real.

(Yet) another thought could be that both John and Vaughn were working for Chinese intelligence. Hence Vaughn having a record at 5.
Perhaps Vaughn and John were double agents though and were secretly working for MI5.

The Chinese recently managed to track Vaughn down again and blackmailed him to get Albany for them.

John faked his own death in an operation 15 years ago, and took another identity with Harry's help i.e Lucas North.

The Chinese now know that John didn't die because either Vaughn tipped them off or they have been watching him and have come back for revenge.

Vaughn though, did some sort of double-double cross 15 years ago, which is why Vaughn is scared of Harry and disappeared 15 years ago.

Harry took Lucas North back to England and he started working for him.

Could John and Lucas be brothers? When Kai said he is traitor because he gave away his brother, the camera focuses on Lucas then back to Kai. Maybe is just a coincidence but that thought crossed my mind at that.
Though I couldn't say who is the legend, John died and Lucas took his name to an op involving Vaughn and met Maya as John. Or is he John, Lucas died and so he took that name?

If Lucas is a traitor and /or is killed at the end it's Good Bye to spooks for me. That would be one death (actual or figurative) too many.

Great comments Tea Lady. That would explain why the CSS have the photo of Lucas, and why Vaughan is scared of "them." So intriguing!

But I'm already bored with the Maya bit. Sorry Tea Lady, I know she's on your signature icon, but I'm starting to cringe when she comes into a scene. Lucas - yes please anytime, even when he's being "dark."

I think the 'brother' thing between Lucas and John is more of a metaphorical bond. Brothers in arms and all that.

Ok, another part Lucas theory.

I think the constant references to "Whose life have you ruined today John" and the ease at which Lucas stitched the other officer up, shows that he has done this before. I wonder whether John set up the real Lucas North 15 years ago and took his identity. The real Lucas North was sent to prison by the Chinese or killed, thinking they had John. That may explain John's explantion to Maya that he probably deserved to go to prison (in Russia) because he always felt guilty about that.

Maybe the real Lucas North is still alive and is now after revenge and has hired those 3 Chinese people to kill John. Or perhaps the Chinese have only just realised they had the wrong person once Vaughn handed them the Albany file. This told them everything and the Chinese now know that John is still alive.
