Extras on the boxset say that they weren't sure about Adam and the nanny relationship when it was first suggested but they decided to keep it in because it showed how vulnerable Adam was after Fiona's death. It wasn't something they thought his character would normally do but emphasised the downward spiral he was suffering from because of the PTSD. Apparently there were many more scenes between the two of them that may have helped to explain it more but those scenes were some of the first to be cut when episodes were edited to fit the hour time slot.
