Favourite piece of film/editing/scene?
Just thought I'd get this one out there.

I thought it would be interesting to see what people considered to be their single best moment in series 9. Be it a piece of film-making worthy of credit, a perfectly executed scene or a great piece of editing.

Getting the ball rolling:

I have to say that for me the one moment that really stood out to me as outstanding film-making this series was in 9.8 when Lucas was holding Maya as she died.
The editing with both the flashbacks and voice-overs as well as the build to him screaming which cut to the outside of the car... Just wow!

Said it before but that's possibly the best piece of film i've seen in a long while. Hats off to the editors as well for their spot on cuts and timing!

I'd like to hear what stood out to you this series. Smile

interesting that he was holding Maya in almost the same way as he held Daniella as she died - hand in same place on neck

The entirety of 3.5

Just brilliantly shot all around.

RE: Favourite piece of film/editing/scene?
I thought overall the cinematography was great. I think the cut backs showed in post production though. I think it showed that the new producer comes from a Production Management background. In a good way.

That said, off the top of my brain, there are a few moments that stand out visually to me.

1) The opening sequence on 9.1 is perfection in every way. First the church, then the idyllic pasture and then Nicholas Blake's house in the rain no less! It all feels very much like an old 1940's movie like The Maltese Falcon. It sets a really great visual tone for the whole series.

2) I also like Maya and Johns first phone call in 9.3. She is standing in her front hallway and the stairs are casting light horizontally and Lucas is in the back hallway of the grid and the light is vertical. I think it visually implies that they are at opposite purposes from the beginning.

3) Another was in the same episode with Dr Kirby standing at the window in the interrogation room. The light looks like steps out of the room but of course they aren't.

4) I love love love the tracking shot of Lucas at the beginning of 9.8 after Harry's voice over in the white church. (I will probably feel stupid for asking this but location, please?)

5) As far sequences are concerned, I really like the sequence when Ruth is in the QMK building in 9.4. I like how it smoothly moves back and forth between Ruth in the field and Harry on the grid. It really shows how in sync they can be from an operational POV.

There are more. But I'll stop there for now.

1) The marriage proposal in 9.1. The simple but beautiful location used. The still camera work (thank goodness.)

2) The scene in the car and on the Embankment at the end of 9.3. I just loved the way they shot that scene in the car with Kirby and then Harry left Ruth all alone on the Embankment as he walked off into the distance.

3) The scene from 9.8 when Harry realises that the runner was staged by Lucas and shouts at the team to get to Ruth. I love the way the music fits with the action here as Dimitri rushes to get to Ruth in time.

I really enjoyed the way the lift-chase scene was filmed in 9.2.

Also the final showdown on the roof, with the way the camera swirled around Harry, giving you a view of London beyond, and then you're suddenly in close with Lucas appearing behind him with the gun.

Abother one I loved was the way the Lucas/Harry interrogation scene was filmed in 9.7, all shadows contrasting with light down in the basement.

I loved this shot as well, the perfect blue sky and the London skyline as background was fantastic.

All really good ones. I was vaguely aware of this watching S9 the first time, but upon re-watching, I am noticing more and more a visual theme of light vs. dark. All very Film Noir.

re: the rooftop scene: obviously they needed someplace for Lucas to, well, you know, but it is interesting that the final showdown takes place out in the open and in the blazing light. Not a shadow to be seen. Both of them are completely exposed.

Definitely my favorite has got to be just Lucas and Ruth in the warehouse, that scene still has me in tears every time! Brilliant acting, brilliant set-up!

And definitely scene where Maya dies is greatly put together with the flashbacks and voice-overs!

Harry and Lucas on the roof and Harry and Lucas in the interrogation was equally stunning!

I also noticed the recurring theme of light/dark, it made for some beautiful camera-work. Definitely agree with you on the interrogation scenes, they were very well done.

That's a very interesting thing to point out! I guess they both finally saw each other for who they really were?

I seem to remember the scene with Lucas and Vaughn in the pub being very nicely done. Gave a real sense of the dingy little place, which really cemented my ideas about Vaughn's character as being this dirty little scoundrel Tongue

Have to say I agree with everyone on this thread! S9 was very well filmed, very professional. It's definitely made me hope they produce a Spooks film one day.
