What will News Corp do with Spooks
According to the financial press, Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp has just acquired a full controlling interest in Shine Group, the owners of Kudos Productions.
Is this good or bad news? I'm not sure but have a dread feeling that relations between NewsCorp and the BBC are not that friendly!Exclamation

Yeah, I'm a bit hesitant to believe that the BBC would be happy to work with NewsCorp. We'll just have to wait and see what happens, I guess. Although the BBC have obviously commissioned several series from Kudos (Hustle, Spooks et al) and they must have known NewsCorp was looking to take shares in the company... so I don't know what to think!

Surely Murdoch must be breaching some form of law by now, he seems to control a very large percentage of the media :/

RE: What will News Corp do with Spooks
TeaLady may have posted something a few days ago but I can't find it now. I have a link from The Guardian on 21 February. The Guardian article has a link to The Telegraph who broke the news a month prior to that. Can I post it?

BTW, Shine is owned by a Murdoch. Elizabeth Murdoch started it in 2001. Shine acquired Kudos in late 2006.

I don't think this will change a thing. If anything, it changed things 4 years ago. Unless the BBC has a problem with Rupert Murdoch specifically and not his daughter. Which very well may be the case. The fact remains that the BBC had been working with "a Murdoch" for 4 years.

I do agree though, it is quite the monopoly Rupert Murdoch is working on.

Well Rupert Murdoch owns rival companies to the BBC, so I suspect that may be an issue? I now understand why Spooks used Sky news instead of the BBC for so long Silba

RE: What will News Corp do with Spooks
Yes it was me, I posted it in the Kudos projects thread. It was an article in the Times Newspaper in the week. My post was:

"Wasn't sure where a good home for this was but it says in the Times today, that Kudos which is part of the Shine Group is being taken over by News Corporation (Murdoch) for £415 million. The deal will go through in April. Not sure whether this is a good thing or bad thing for Kudos."

Thinking about it, I can't see this having much of an impact. I can't see the BBC being spiteful towards Kudos just because the owner of their parent group has changed hands. Why would they do that when Spooks still makes them money? Also, Kudos still makes a lot of other programmes for the BBC.

Also, we have no idea what contracts the BBC has in place with Kudos and whether they own certain rights re Spooks. (I'm just guessing, I have no idea how these things work.) I think the only plus about this is if the BBC decides to stop funding Spooks, then SKY may may provide the funding for the series to carry on.

Oh please, no. The funding would be nice, but only if Kudos still make all executive decisions regarding the show.

Do you guys get Fox News? I am SO sorry! I thought we only inflicted that one our own. Look at the bright side, without Fox News we would have on one to make fun of!
