RE: Series 10 - Episode 5 Discussion
Kazters,
after Ending happy's suggestion to focus on the house, I re-watched ep 5 for the 3rd time and I didn't really notice the coat before. I thought much like you that
Series 10 Spoiler: show
the coat might be Tom's and that we just assume it is Harry's house because we see him there but that it might not be - a safe house, or Tom's like you said perhaps? Or, another thought - it was Harry's house and he somehow got in contact with Tom, told him what's going on so that he can be prepared to take over when Harry is taken in custody or something? I also noticed that to me, the garden of the house looks similar to the background that is in the photo of Tom reappearing. So, maybe after Harry is gone, Ruth or the others get a message to go there, not knowing who it's from, and when they arrive, they see Tom appear out of the garden. Probably completely wrong as usual! SmileI still can't see why Tom would be the bad guy in all this. I mean why would he want to hurt Harry?

Re: Harry's leaving montage.

The coat, the milk and the device....

The coat - I could be wrong, but that coat looks an awful lot like Harry's "field jacket" he has worn in the past, most notably in S6. Not that S6 would have anything to do with S10, just that the jacket would be something that only the die-hard fans would recognize. I know there is some talk of it being Ruth's b/c she mysteriously has the cream coat on on the beach, but I wonder if that is a red herring? (Quite aside from that, if Harry & Ruth finally tripped the light fantastic and I did not get one iota of Harry's chest, I will be most seriously displeased! Thcussing Big Grin)

The milk - I still think it is a dead drop for someone.

The device - He doesn't take it with him, yet he burns his Big Box O' Secrets and dumps the milk?

Suffice it to say, I think Harry is waaaay ahead of the game. That is why he tells Ruth to pretend that it isn't the end, because he knows it isn't.

With you all the way. I can't fathom what the silver thing is, but did see it. However, I've reached the calm before the storm and have every faith in Sir Harry Pearce to save the day and himself!

I do think Ruth thought it was the end on the beach though. If he truly did, I think the kiss would've been more of a lip locker and less of a bye for now. Time will tell!

I just noticed something else - on the front of the file that Harry burns in the garden is written 'Boundless.' Don't know if this is relevant in any way. On another point in re-watching ep 5, I'd forgotten one of the H.S. brilliant lines to Ruth in the American Embassy when she reappears after having stolen the laptop: " I thought you'd been extraordinarily rendered'. Big Grin I shall miss SRB as the H.S. too,he's been brilliant.

I'm still getting my knickers in a twist about these clues - which of course could be a complete red herring!

Is it possible that Ruth makes it to Harry's house with the stolen lap top, and they study what's on it? Then, realising that Harry's car is bugged, they set up a trap for Sasha, so that he can 'steal' the lap top from Ruth. We assume that he ambushes Ruth after leaving the embassy, but supposing it is a few hours later?

RE: Series 10 - Episode 5 Discussion
Having just re-watched this episode (my personal favourite of the series) and listened to the interview with PF and NW on the dvd, I noticed what I think may have been a late change/inclusion to the script and wondered what others thought.

During the interview NW says something along the lines of that Ruth thought she was special to Harry and suddenly realises she's just another asset. The scene in 10.5 that makes you think that could be true is the scene betwen Harry and Ruth in the car, in particular the end of the scene where Harry asks Ruth to retrieve the lap-top from the American Embassy. I've always thought that the later conversation they have after Ruth has got the laptop and Harry is driving was changed as you hardly see either of them speak their sentences, the camera view is mainly from different angles.

I'm wondering if the interview was done prior to some of this filming and when that when the iv was watched back by the Producers/Writers etc they realised that they'd gone too far in what had been written and didn't want it interpreted that Harry thought of Ruth purely as an asset. Therefore they changed the second conversation after watching the initial previews of 10.5 to include Harry reassuring Ruth that she wasn't an asset and that he wasn't known for his tact after she asks him whether what he feels for her is just guilt! I think the Producers and writers may have wanted to keep up the sense of 'angst and seperation' between the 2 characters so much before 10.6, that they went a little too far and only realised this when they saw the initial previews!

I hope this makes sense as I struggled to get my thoughts down clearly on this but would be interested in hearing if anyone has had the same thoughts, or if I'm reading way to much into it or have gone completely mad!

RE: Series 10 - Episode 5 Discussion
It is true that the conversation between Harry in the car and Ruth on the street was a little strange. I was just relieved that Harry admitted to Ruth that she was more than an asset to him when he told her that he was not known for his tact, having proposed to her at a funeral. He said it with a lot of tenderness in his expression. I found that the mirror revealed a lot of Harry's feelings for Ruth and I liked the way Ruth stopped in the street because she was somewhat distressed by the conversation.

What I found puzzling was the scene at the hospital where the HS was examined after the terrorist attempt. Ruth told Harry she was sorry that she did not have the laptop because Sasha had stolen it. Harry did not seem surprised and did not react. The theft of the laptop by Sasha seemed to have been brushed over. It was never explained either why on the laptop there was the birth certificate of Sasha with the name of Harry as the father. It was obviously a fake and why did Jim Coaver have it? Did Elena have two birth certificates, one with the name of the real father Ilya Gavrik and one with the name of the putative father Harry.

Intelligence officers the world over have legitimate passports in different names - so the KGB should have no trouble organising two legitimate birth certificates with Harry and Ilya as father respectively.

Re the scene at the hospital and Harry's non-reaction, perhaps it was simply because right at that moment he had bigger concerns than Sasha finding out that Harry is his father: there had just been an attempt on the Home Secretary's life and that had to take priority over Harry's personal issues.

RE: Series 10 - Episode 5 Discussion
I didn't see him not react to it. I saw a horrified look cross over his face when Ruth told him. I just saw him not address it in that moment for the reasons Silktie mentions. The work comes first. Always. When Harry does react emotionally to something, bad things happen, e.g. Ruth's exile, assassination of Kachimov, assassination of Blake, Sasha, to name the biggies. And if memory serves, Harry doesn't know precisely what is on Coaver's laptop that he thought Harry should have, does he?

As for why Coaver had the false birth certificate, those pieces weren't too hard to put together in my mind. I thought it was because Elena and the KGB had fed it to him or because he had "acquired" them through the means that many security services' "acquire" documents they shouldn't have.
