I think Ruth's evolved form 5.05 so perhaps there won't be much unsaid, hopefully, but I don't think they would swear endless love... (I'm too pesimist lately, well, I'd rather say realistic... I'm generally an optimist)
I only want some talk about their feelings and if it's not too much a little kiss

came back and was re-integrated into the grid in S8, the writers would actually write for the relationship in S9, if that series came to pass.

That's my new theory -- it'll keep me going for awhile!

I like your theory, lwhite53, and I think it's a good one, you were the one (weren't you) who said Ruth came back because they have for her a good storyline and I still agree with that, IMO, kudos knew from the beginning they'd get a series 9, because (as I've said before, I'm repeating myself too much) this series deserves a proper ending.

It's also true that HR relationship gave some steps, few, but at least is something, compared with the other characters...

There seem to be conflicting ideas on whether or not Ruth has a relationship of any significance with her mother, or if she's even in her life much.

I've always assumed after something she said to Angela in 4.10 that she left home and never really looked back after college. Maybe not estranged, but certainly strained and only a few times a year meeting up.

What do other people think?

Given what we learned in 4.10, I don't think Ruth has had any contact with mum since she left for college, not even the occasional visit. I think she walked away and never looked back, as seeing them (mum and step-father) would remind her too much of step-brother (whose name I can't remember) and that whole situation. Probably the first instigator for why R buries herself in work.

In the EERIE (do i have that right) exercise she didnt want to phone anyone to say goodbye. Even if she had fallen out with her mother you would have thought she would have still wanted to have phoned her. I took from that, that she had no relationship whatsoever with her mother and didnt care anymore. A bit like Harry and Graham. A blood relation only. Nothing else.

Seems my initial impulse was right then. I really only suggested the thing about occasional visits with the blessed assistance of a TV because I know there are others who could see her being a doting daughter.

I dunno about that theory with her mother - maybe she had died during Ruth's time at MI5, it said in the Personnel files that they were close. (Another issue to look at JHyde/Beatriz/Tea Lady )
