[spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
I think that she was probably very surprised at what he had said because he had shared classified information with a man who they had interrogated earlier on even if his daughter had been murdered.

He was defiantely doing the right thing by the scientist and I suppose when Ruth thought about it she would realise that. Especially with him saying "give a man a chance" she knows as well as he does that they have only ever had that one date where he has been properly lucid (can't say he was at the funeral or probably at the docks really.) and she has been with the "real" Harry.

Another thing is before they realise that Aziz is after the nerve agent and he appears on the screen, Ruth shouts "Harry" at which point he turns back and snaps at her what I think was "tonight." Not sure, could anyone clarify? The little snaps are great, I think that this episode is definately a turning point.

Is Ruth protecting him from something . I think Ruth has a dark secret and because of her feelings for Harry she will not allow him to get close. I think Ruth is not all she seems ( still my favourite character though )

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
Ruth seemed to soften a little bit towards Harry at the end to me too. Or maybe I'll just join TL in the eternal optimist corner. My interpretation is that he has surprised her with his reaction to her statement that they are close through work. He's not being very mature about it, but perhaps she needs to see that to realise that he really loves her, and the ill-timed proposal was not just done on a whim. His statement at the end there was definitely a message to her that he thinks she's never given him a fighting chance, and I think she got the message loud and clear. Whether she will do anything about it is another matter of course.

That last scene was beautifully acted by both PF and NW.

Yes I agree Silktie. She got the message at the end.

I am glad in a way that Harry is acting this way. It makes him human. He also seems to carry it over to his dealings with Towers. I loved the way Harry tried to keep calm when Towers said Ruth's name and that he had been speaking to her. "You've spoken to Ruth?" Harry was acting like a 10yr old. It really sounded like "You've spoken to MY Ruth?"

When Ruth and Harry had their little spat, was Harry trying to say that this is me treating you as just a work colleague Ruth? This is how gruff I am with other members of staff and that you have had special treatment all these years.

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
This episode made me formulate a theory: When Ruth tells Harry that they've forfeited the chance for a normal life because of the things they've done and seen, I think Harry hears that as meaning that Ruth thinks he is no longer a fundamentally good human being. This whole episode is about Harry trying to make morally good decisions, such as letting the terrorist go in the beginning, and telling the truth to the Professor at the end. Both these decisions can end up costing him his job, but he is taking that risk perhaps to prove to himself and to Ruth that he is still a good man. That would also explain why in the corridor scene, as he's falling on his sword and admitting to making a mistake in letting the guy go, he seems so deeply touched when Ruth tells him it was the decent thing to do.

Maybe now that he knows she still sees him as a good man, he'll ease up on her at work?

It was Harry's turn for honesty in this one, a really short but very effective scene between them at the end there.

I came here basically to say what Silktie just said and probably better than I could. Great minds Smile

I'm not on the trite wagon for these two, I think the writers are doing OK. I still they're on hold, but we'll probably keep getting these moments.

I read Harry's reaction to the HS more as surprise that the HS didn't go through him personally, but went straight to one of his underlings. I don't think we've ever seen that happen before, have we? I did laugh at the snotty way in which he then informs Ruth that the HS sends his regards - I agree that he'd lost the plot with Ruth by then. I'm also wondering why Ruth didn't just inform Harry that the HS had spoken to her. Surely she must have known he'd get a little pissy about that. Hopefully it was just a case of there not being time to do so before Harry spoke to the HS himself.

I know Harry has been a bit immature in handling the whole rejection thing from Ruth, and that it annoys many people, but I'm actually really enjoying it for some reason. Maybe because it's such a normal reaction, and as TL says, shows that Harry is human after all. Plus, it allows PF to show us something a little different than his normal impassive, in-control routine.

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
Someone else may have a differing opinion, but if you have read the Ian Wylie interview with Nicola Walker, it doesn't seem to give much away in respect of the H/R relationship. It seems to just talk about where we are up to now, in the series. As for other comments of mine which relate to this article and speculation and concern on my part, I will put in spoiler tags.

Series Ian Wylie NW interview and pre season Radio Times interview with PF Spoiler: show
It sounds like Ruth gets into a fight and quite a nasty one at that. She must get hurt if she is having wood smashed over her head. What if this violence is directly or indirectly carried out by Lucas after Ruth finds something out? If anyone will find something out then it is Ruth. PF talks about this series of Spooks being taken up by Harry's quest for revenge. Well, we have only seen this in 9.1 so far, in any real degree. What if Harry then goes after Lucas for what has happened to Ruth?

God, I hate to be late to the party!! Tongue I've quoted most of the post you've written Confused But I'll try and make it shorter. Wonderful posts Tea Lady and Silktie.
I'm with you, I'm very optimistic and I think all this is going to end well this series at least. I also think Ruth was taken aback by Harry's comments and left her to believe he hasn't given up. I don't know what made Ruth stay where she was instead of running after him. This scene did bring a tear to my eye. These two always make me feel like this, lately...

I also thought that HR were very close in that scene, SPOOK91. I also thought a kiss would have been brilliant, but I guess not very believable Big Grin

Yes, I watched it again. Harry snaps back at Ruth, "tonight."
