RE: Sam disappears
I always felt Sam was treated badly as a character, the way she just disappeared. Its a shame for the actress Shauna MacDonald who played her - she was very good in a British horror film called The Descent. I think the writers didn't know what to do with Sam and consequently she ended up having one of the worst exit storylines ever.

RE: Sam disappears
Yeah, I agree with you, her exit-line should have been better, even an additional couple of scenes could have made her departure better. Sam never really was taken seriously, did she even have a proper job role in Section D?

DANNY - Placements all over the shop. Back up vehicles, chopper support if we need it. Bomb disposal with a signal jammer for Mary’s trademark remote control blasts. And Tom here’s doing the catering. Mate. You are so covered.

Erm... Let's make up a role title for her! Because everyone always seems to have bizarre work titles. She could be... Assistant Research Officer?

RE: Sam disappears
"It is better to burn out than fade away." Because let's be honest, the quote should really go "It is better for your character in Spooks in terms of dramatic effect to burn out than fade away." Because Tom burnt out, as did Adam at the end of series 5, and they had a massive section. Poor Sam just slipped away...

Sadly, without Zoe & Danny around, she really didn't serve a purpose any more.

RE: Sam disappears
In Harry's diary it explains why Sam left. She was transferred to GCHQ due to her reaction to Danny's death

RE: Sam disappears
For those who are interested in a true account of what the daily routine is at Thames House, I would recommend reading the Liz Carlyle Novels by Stella Rimington, ex Five's DG.

The authenticity of the background, procedures, interactions with the MPSB, Six, foreign services, Foreign Office etc... even cars and clothes make for a very unique and plausible insight into the Services.

Sure enough there is some action compacted in 300 or so pages, but it is a novel and is supposed to cultivate suspense, some action, some romance etc.... However globally Rimington made a point of maintaining a very high high level of reality in the plots (Intel officers do NOT conduct surveillance themselves for instance....Undecided)
As a matter of fact, the books resemble closely the first couple seasons of "Spooks", when the plots were credible, the cooperation with Special Branch, CO19 or Surveillance Units part of the daily routine etc... And Spooks didn't try to imitate some cheap American show "à la 24"Confused
