Most despicable series 9 character?
I see there is one of these threads for almost every one of the previos seasons, but not for series 9. Short story: I decided to make one. If the thread does exist, and I managed to miss it going through the S9 threads twice, feel free to remove it and slap the n00b on the fingers.

So who did we not like too much this time? Maya seems to be the absolutely least popular character, but I'm not sure she qualifies as dislikable. Actually, I'm not sure she qualifies as a character. She didn't do anything at all.

Vaughn was the series primary antagonist, and a superiorly smug bastard at that. But even he seemed to have standards. He showed genuine concern for Maya, at least.

Or maybe the French foreign legionaire that Ruth killed. And killed, and killed. He was nasty, but he died awesomely, providing a great scene for Ruth.

The Chinese who wanted to buy Albany and use it to wipe out millions of innocent people. Yes, he was definitely despicable.

How about John Bateman? If Maya counts as a separate character, I guess he does too, since he's got more personality. And he is clearly not Lucas.

And for good measure, let's throw in Harry, since a lot of fans are getting angry with him as well.

[/i]
As for my personal vote: Vaughn, all the way.

RE: Most despicable series 9 character?
When you say despicable, characters such as Sarah Caulfield come to mind. She was truly despicable. But to me there was nobody in series 9 quite like that. Yes, I hated Vaughn ith a passion, but he wasn't on the same level of despicable-ness as SC, not even close. So that's a tricky question if you ask me..

Harry: "Dear God, Ruth. Is any institution in this country safe from you?"
Ruth: "I like to think not.".

Good thinking in making this thread Smile

Let me be the first person to say that the real villain of the piece for me is whoever was responsible for the risible Lucas-is-John storyline, followed closely by the person or persons who should have suggested a better alternative... and didn't.

As for actual characters:
1. Dr Kirby (ep3), who had trained his child from an early age to accept her death at the hands of others. The cynic in me thinks it is no wonder Harry was so morally lenient on him in the end
2. Robert Westhouse (ep2), who really was all the things Finn Lambert was so keen to expose in 8.3. Just because he wasn't an unusual kind of wicked (for Spooks anyway) doesn't mean we shouldn't notice his wickedness, or that we should think it is irrelevant
3. John Bateman (whoever he is/was), because he represented harm to Malcolm, and that's just not on!

Robert Westhouse is definitely a contender for most despicable character.
How about Viktor Barenshik, the FSB agent sent to the Grid to track Aibek, he seemed to kill rather indiscriminately.
Maya was the most despicable cardboard cut on Spooks!

Lucas 8.4: It's all about trust, isn't Harry ?.

1) Robert Westhouse - scum like him do exist and think they are above the law.

2) The real Lucas North - for shooting his mouth off about joining the service.

3) Dimitri - for interrupting Harry and Ruth at the end of 9.8, so I have to wait another blinking year to see if these two sort themselves out.

4) Nico - for sending that photo and upsetting Ruth.

(Sorry if haven't quoted correctly I'm new at this)

I wouldn't quite say despicable but Harry is top of my list for not doing more for Lucas or at least try to bring him back from the brink, he was more interested in the bigger picture, and when he finally knew that Albany was at the heart of it and knowing it was fake kept that knowledge to himself, whereas Lucas with that information may have taken a different path.

Interesting point although I will have to disagree, with respect. Harry gave Lucas his full trust. He gave him the position of Section Chief with A level clearance. Harry's job is not to baby sit his Chief, surely. Also Harry did give Lucas a second chance when he set him free and gave him his gun back. By the time Harry knew about Albany, Lucas had been partly responsible for the death of Dolly Parton, had himself stolen Albany (but it wasn't the actual file) so had comitted treason, had let an innocent Officer go to prison, and had killed Vaughn. I'm not sure there was any way back for him after that, even if he knew Albany was fake. I can't really see how Harry can be held responsible for those actions taken by Lucas. IMO.

I totallly agree with you when you say the real villain of the piece is the person who came up with that ridiculous JB storyline - whoever it was, for me he certainly is the most despicable contributor to S9.
But of course that's not really the topic of the thread. So coming back to the most despicable character of S9:

1. Maya. Compared with her even SC suddenly appears to be quite ok, because at least she had some sort of personality. Maya never seemed to be interested in anything, she was never bothered by anything, she never asked questions, in fact she never really did anything. But because of that the question is if she actually counts as a "character".
2. John Bateman. Dealing with drugs, blowing up the British embassy and killing lots of innocent people simply because he wanted to "be someone" or because he was bored (I never quite understood his motives), murdering his friend to get his passport, framing an innocent colleague, killing Danielle, being prepared to kill Malcolm and Ruth, betraying his country and finally taking his own life because he was too much of a coward to face the consequences of his actions - to me there hardly can be anyone more despicable than him. Still I can't really list him, because for me he doesn't exist. He's only a fantasy figure out of a nightmare poor Lucas is having (or out of a nightmare of one or more of the writers) and so of course for me he isn't a "character" of S9
3. Vaughn. He was behind the bombing in Dakar, he was working for the Chinese and, worst of all, he tried to make Lucas think he was someone called John Bateman. That's unpardonable and that's what makes him the real villain of the series and the most despicable character for me.

Tea Lady, it was Cyndi Lauper, not Dolly Parton! Or am I not thinking of the trailer park woman with the tats? I agree, not Harry's responsibility and Lucas could have always gone to Harry earlier and it would have been sorted, no Ruth in danger which we didn't like Sad.

I thought that S9 lacked a real baddie, a common enemy we could all get together and hate. Vaughn probably gets my vote, but I kind of admired the way he ran rings round Lucas/Johnny Boy and I loved his awful limp (whilst it lasted).

RE: Most despicable series 9 character?
That's a simple question with a simple answer....the evil briefcase of doom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dodgy

The evil briefcase started it all! If the evil briefcase didn't exist, none of this would happen!!

Secondly, Maya, for just simply being there, she was another reason for Lucas/John to go gaga!

Thirdly, Vaughn for giving Lucas that evil briefcase of doom!

Fourthly, Harry Pearce. He let Lucas down in Moscow, and he let him down again. I will probably never ever forgive Harry for not trying hard enough. Even though the most logical part of me knows that it really isn't his fault, my heart cannot forgive Harry for giving up on Lucas.
