RE: Episode 1 Discussion
It reminded me of when Danny and Adam were torturing that mercenary in a previous series with the drinking water.

DANNY - Placements all over the shop. Back up vehicles, chopper support if we need it. Bomb disposal with a signal jammer for Mary’s trademark remote control blasts. And Tom here’s doing the catering. Mate. You are so covered.

Also, in interrogation methods, sometimes the absence of something that is expected - the infliction of pain, for instance - can create havoc with the subject's ability to hold out. Note how Harry flinches away each time Mani makes a sudden move - he is expecting violence but the longer they postpone it the weaker his ability to withstand, as they have given his mind time to conjure up what terrible things they will do to him when they eventually start.

I never thought about that before, but I suppose that it's true. You get worn out by the tension, so you're weaker...

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
It is, I've been nodding up and down furiously reading these posts. I wrote a history paper on the development of torture methods and their effectiveness - don't ask, it was horribly distressing. Won me some money though Smile But I've learned more about how people hurt each other than I care to know.

And a line that made me gasp and still catches my breath on re-watching is "You know nothing about compassion". It's true Harry is limited sometimes, as he himself has admitted (think 4.10), but in comparison with Mani....

Why on earth were you writing a paper about torture? Is that the entrance exam to get into the secret service or something Wink

Fortunately not. But they probably thought I was some weird Dexter-ish character.

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
I've only watched the episode in its entirety once. However, I've watched the Ros/Nicholas meetings countless times. No surprise there, eh? Wink

The scenes that stick in my mind are:

1. Ros' apology to Malcolm. She's got such a sharp tongue on her and it was good that she realised that what she'd said warranted an apology.
2. The first meeting with the Home Secretary. They've always had respect for each other but this conversation was so much softer than any ever before....maybe they've got to know each other a bit better Wink
3. Nicola Walker's acting was just fab. The whole emotional rollercoaster that she went through due to the possibility that Nico was going to die....just brilliant. You knew just how she felt. Nothing was left to the imagination.
4. Malcolm saying he wanted to retire. This needs to be resolved IMO....no-one just says they're retiring and walks out.
