In the trailer for series 9 wasn't there a suitcase with stuff in it. The only thing I can remember for definite is a passport.

Maybe Lucas was a sleeper agent for some underground network and this bag is part of his activation process!

Whatever it is, I'll be very surprised if it was completely kept from Harry and the team at Five.

It all does rather smack of another character called Vaughan from Alias. But hey, I'm going along with it. I'm tipping that Skully is right and that Lucas was an anarchist in his student days.

I think that's close to the mark, JHyde. We know from various threads that:

But look at what Vaughan said (and the italics are mine):

So basically 5 years before being captured in Moscow. Essentially he couldn't have been with the Service more than 4 and a half years, at most. We don't know exactly when he was recruited, but maybe it was this experience that scared him straight. It will be interesting to see whether he comes clean to Harry about Vaughan, especially given their past relationship. Except this time, it is Lucas keeping his cards close perhaps?

Anyone else have ideas about what might be in the bag and who the mystery man might be?

Well, there did seem to be some old pictures and gambling chips and stuff, maybe Lucas was a gambler when he was younger, got in with the wrong crowd, had to do some pretty bad stuff to clean his debts before he joined MI5?

Who recruited Lucas? Do we know if it's Harry? I mean, they always say that Lucas was Harry's prodigy, so did Harry recruited Lucas into the Grid? Maybe Harry knows something about Lucas's past?

Maybe we'll see Harry, Lucas, and Malcolm team up this series since they are all from the old days? Maybe even a TINY glimpse of Tom Quinn (one can dream)?

As for Lucas's terrified look, I can understand, if I had an old picture with the hair that Lucas was seen having, I'd be dead terrified of people discovering it too!

I haven't really noticed these lines. I was more intrigued when I heard:

It sounds as if "John" stole a real Lucas North's identity or something like that...
