The 'View Today's Posts' page shows all new posts in the last 24 hours and highlights the ones you haven't read yet.

For periods longer than that, you'll have to rely on the [s] indicators on the main page, go into each forum and the threads with new posts that you haven't read will be in bold.

I'm not prepared to make changes to our forum software right now, there is a new version coming out soon which would render any changes I make now, useless.

They were added while you were away. They indicate sections of the forum which contain posts that you haven't read, it's unique to each person.
