I think their point was it could have been any of the former soviet satellite "XXXXstan" countries that had recently petitioned for entry to the EU, since they all apparently have abundant natural resources and no money to mine them.

That's actually nice to know. There is so much poverty and once the investment deals get made, money will flow in and energy and whatever will flow out. Here's hoping it all goes down fairly and environmentally sound.

Rooftop scene:
Beth and Dmitri sneak up and disarm Lucas, cuff him and lead him away.
Lucas screams, "No Harry please, I'd rather die!"

Harry: "We're sending you to rehab ................. in Texas."

I wouldn't bet on that. Energy companies aren't known for being fair or environmentally friendly in the pursuit of new product and/or markets, alas.Sad

RE: Episode 2 Discussion
In all the hub bub of the count down to S9, I have been re-watching S8 and have been fixated on the name "Violet Franklin."

This may be more of a question for the US Spooks, but when she says that she chose the name because Franklin is her favorite President, does she mean:

a) Franklin Delano Roosevelt - Democratic US President from 1933 -1945, President throughout the Great Depression and WWII, creator of the New Deal, sometimes credited for at least attempting to drag the US out of isolationist foreign policy of the time and attendee of the Yalta Conference at the end of WWII. If this is the case, her references to Yalta could have double meaning?

or

b) Benjamin Franklin - who as never President but was a Loyalist diplomat and mediator between the colonies and the Crown for most of his adult life, celebrated as a great defender of the rights of the colonists by attempting to address the colonialists grievances in a way that the British could accept, until his dressing down by the kings Privy Council regarding the Massachusetts letters that led to the Boston Tea Party and being accused of being a traitor to the Crown? (He was no saint by any stretch of the imagination but was certainly an interesting guy!) If this is the case, she is insulting Lucas' intelligence with the idea that BF was a President and subtly aligning herself with BF as a mediator and possible revolutionary?

What do you think?

Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet [Spooks];
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

~Wm. Shakespeare, Hamlet

I was thinking the exact same thing while watching season 8!

I *do* think she meant Roosevelt. Funny to try and reconcile the politics of Caulfield with the man in the chair!

Thing is, wasn't Roosevelt known by his surname more than his first name? (Could be wrong - my knowledge of my own country's history is pretty bad, let alone another country's). Also (and here I am also probably wrong) but I seem to remember SC/someone saying she takes the surnames of Presidents... Undecided

I personally think it was a writing slip-up, and the writer/s thought Benjamin Franklin was President once...

RE: Episode 2 Discussion
I know that New Yorkers in the 30s used to just call him Franklin, not just because of his family (he came from a really big, wealthy family in New York) but also during the Depression after he won office.

I sincerely doubt that Ben Richards is as much of a dork about either Ben Franklin or Roosevelt as I am, but hey, it's possible. I have favourite biographies of both these illustrious men.

I'm sticking with the Roosevelt theory, although Nia's point could very well be true.
