RE: Fryer Voted Top "Spooks" Death
I have to agree that the fryer death stands out to me, but i think the death of the
Series 2 Spoiler: show
Algerian Mohammed Rachid, the spy pretending to be a terrorist and died with the suicide bomber in 2.02
stands out the most to me personally.

RE: Fryer Voted Top "Spooks" Death
I would vote it my top death as well. It was just brilliant for the following reasons:

- We didn't know what Spooks was like as a programme. For example, we were unaware that the writers were willing to kill off central characters and popular actors/actresses. So when it happened, it was jaw dropping.

- The death itself was the worst imaginable. The whole episode leading up to her demise sends a shiver down my spine. It builds up extremely effectively. You know that Helen has slipped up with the swingers story and that's when unease sets in. Furthermore, Danny or Tom states she'll be fine "she's passed all the exams" to get into MI5... this comment just leaves the viewer concerned. She may have passed the exams with flying colours, but will she cope with such a big and serious operation? You get the impression she's out of her depth, but we believe she'll be saved by the end of the episode, as no other programme kills off a likeable central character two episodes in.... or so we thought...

- Helen was a nice and extremely likeable character, who the viewers cared for and that was only after two episodes! This made her death all the more upsetting.

Other Spook deaths have been effective, but nothing can top Helen's for me. I rewatched it today and it still upsets me eight years on!

RE: Fryer Voted Top "Spooks" Death
Actually her death was the reason I continued watching Spooks. It was recommended to me by Amazon, because I had ordered other spy series before and I had a go at it. After the first two episodes I was about to give up, thinking, "Hey, do you really think that post 9/11 some crazy pro-lifers or right wing nuts are the ultimate threat?" But the fryer scene had me hooked. Thank goodness, the next episode was the one with Alexander Siddig!

No, bad memory, that's all. Anyway, it was a more topical episode. I'll have another look at it. Sorry.

Edit: Ah, the Turkish embassy! At least it was something Middle Eastern!

7.1 was my first episode too, and I did wonder after the end what I was getting myself into watching Spooks Big Grin

I think because the show was relatively new at the time and the fact we didn't know what to expect made it that bit more shocking! Fantastic scene well played by all involved.

Holy Moly! Just watched series 1 today, and Helen's death was brutal, would have to agree that from what i've seen so far was the most shocking. I'm totally hooked on this show, watched all 6 episodes and i had to go order season 2 straight after i was finished.

(27-02-2010 04:36 AM)Skully Wrote:  It was definitely shocking, but I think it was more shocking for those who were familiar with the actor (Lisa Faulkner) who played Helen Flynn. Being in Australia I had no idea who she was, I was not aware of her popularity. Apparently the fact that Spooks killed off a popular actress at such an early stage in the series contributed to the shock factor.

Series 7 Spoiler: show
Ben's death shocked me the most! Awful, but brilliantly done.

G'day

Still think it's been the most brutal death to date in 9 seasons, which is why people always bring it up.
