RE: Episode 4 Discussion [rewatch]
That is a very good point which I hadn't even thought of. I wonder how on earth you prove you are actually a spy ? Shouldn't think you get a guided tour of the Grid lol !

True. There's no number you can call and ask "Can you verify for me, please, whether my husband/boy friend/significant other is a spy working for HMG." I take your point that once he told her he wasn't who she thought he was, all kinds of things could have been going through her mind, especially as she'd already had one bad experience with Maisie's father. And he really didn't help the situation much -- he just shut down on her.

It's no greater a leap of faith than any other in a relationship though. It's no more difficult to believe that your significant other is a spy than it is to believe they're into you in the first place.

RE: Episode 4 Discussion [rewatch]
I think Tom didn't handle it quite well, he admited he was a spy, and after a while Danny called him, they needed to meet, and Tom told Ellie he must leave to grab a beer when they were discussing, he denied that call had something to do with his job. I don't think that was fair, it wouldn't have been a problem to tell her it was a spy issue...

Another thing is when do you tell the other person you're spy? when it's too soon and when it's too late? Obviously your wedding day is not a good choice Wink

Good point, Beatriz. Tom finally gets around to telling Ellie he's been lying to her all this time, and then Danny calls and Tom lies to her again! He can't quite decide what he wants her to know and that just exacerbates the situation.

RE: Episode 4 Discussion [rewatch]
Tom was far too cold to Ellie. She must have had hundreds of questions. Okay he probably would not be allowed to answer most of them but he should have taken his time the explain the implications of what being a spy meant, to all of them. Ellie was angry & confused and Tom just walked out. Not Tom's best moment.

RE: Episode 4 Discussion [rewatch]
I agree that he could have handled it a lot better. I think he was trying to be clinical about it not only so that it came across as less of an issue and complication for them, but also so that he came across as honest. Instead it played as him being cold.

When I say 'him' I'm referring to Tom as a character, not MM making a dodgey choice or anything.

RE: Episode 4 Discussion [rewatch]
As a spy, Tom's meant to be able to read people. He's known Ellie for some some months now, so why would he even think to explain this situation "clinically"? He has to know that she would not respond well -- hell, we've only known her for 3 1/2 hours and we already know that!

RE: Episode 4 Discussion [rewatch]
I adore Jools Siviter and his insanity. "Oh Tom, you spoke. Good to see you're working on your skills." I love the way Harry dealt with Danny's monetary indiscretion "Then give me the cards you bloody idiot." HAH.

But, I'm sorry, I really can't stand Ellie. She's completely ridiculous. Yes, I understand it's a difficult thing to deal with, finding out your significant other is a spy and as such, required to lie to you on an everyday basis, but it's not as though he's maliciously trying to deceive her for some selfish purpose. I also realize that she's a bit sensitive due to her experience with Maisie's father, but HONESTLY! She completely went on the offense when he did tell her. No wonder Tom began to give clipped, succinct responses; trying to rationally explain it to her--poor thing was terrified. It's more a matter of him shutting down than him shutting HER down. It's not like she was open to discussing the matter at all. And WHY in hell would you ever expect a spy to tell a CHILD what he does for a living. She's clearly insane and this has to be the most ridiculous ultimatum: "Tell Maisie or I leave you." And as for him lying to her about meeting Danny, OF COURSE! HE'S A SPY. Just because she's aware that he's a spook and they're shagging doesn't mean she needs to know every little detail of every mission. Talk about high expectations. She's always struck me as a simpering idiot who's too full of herself to realize exactly what Tom was telling her. Not to mention the phone call from 'Harold' that she flat out refused to tell him about. Ridiculous, I tell you! How passive aggressive of her.
Spoiler: show
I'm happy it doesn't work out between them.

I'm being rather harsh, aren't I? I can't really explain it, she just rubs me the wrong way.

RE: Episode 4 Discussion [rewatch]
I see your point phoenix, I also thought it was a little unfair of Ellie, he is serving his country after all, keeping HER safe! And she just gives him grief!

What's up with that?
