No. Ros and the HS couldn't possibly survive an explosion that size and at that proximity. If they had survived, the show would lose a heap of credibility. I'm hoping the "cred" factor will improve for S9. And the scripts.

Is anyone else worried that the "old friend" with blood on their hands could be Malcolm?

I did wonder about the use of the words "trusted" and "friend" and I know that almost everyone came back and said it must be Blake. Blake was not my first thought. I would have said Harry counted Blake as a friend but trusted? I am not so sure, considering the things he has been involved in, in the past. My first thought was actually Ruth but couldn't think of a motive for her doing so. As for it being Malcolm, I guess we do not know what he has been doing since he left section D. He may have been unwittingly involved.

RA said in an interview: "Nightingale comes through as a thread with the old home secretary that was in the last series. That thread is still alive, but it does come to an end at that point and then we have a new problem."

That makes me think that the series 8 storyline will be wrapped up in the first episode/aftermath of Ros's death and that the old HS might have been involved into nightingale after all. He claimed that he has been set up, but what if he hasn't?

I could never in a million years see Malcolm to be a traitor, for whatever reason. Ever.
Nicholas Blake though - always been a ruthless so-and-so. Absolutely possible. And I agree that this whole angle will be wrapped up quickly.. unless - apparently they had to go back and re-visit old eps and 'threads' to make everything fit. What if Nightingale (in different disguises) has been around much longer.. and that Vaughn character and Lucas' past are parts of the puzzle?

With regards to the old and trusted friend who turns out to be a traitor,

What if Ruth actually couldn't forgive Harry for the death of George and the break up of the family she'd found in Cyprus? After all, she gave up her life for Harry so that he could carry on being successful, and look how she was repaid.

This isn't what I would want to happen by the way, but it is a theory I can't shake off. I'm really worried this traitor is going to be Ruth.

IIRC that was what RA said in an interview but I don't think that means they actually re-visited old storylines to show them in a different light. IMO he was talking about his own character backstory, the explanations he himself has found for Lucas actions/motivation and it turned out that the writers had something different in mind than he thought. He always does that and has already been through changing a character's backstory when the RH writers decided to reveal Guy's past.
