Hmm Jamie Bamber could be a good choice, brilliant actor and definitely one of well-known fame. Sean Bean could be another great casting, and considering he played 006 in James Bond, that it may be very interesting to see him back in the spy games!

Gary Oldman may be too busy in the films to do Spooks, but maybe a guest appearance?

David Tennant coming on would be splendid!

Like it or not, one of Spooks attractions has been the "easy on the eye" quality of it's male leads, eg. Matthew, Rupert, Richard. And, like it or not, this fact does attract a female following for Spooks, and why not? It's a better quality program than SOOOOOOOOOOOOO many others, and a great showcase/stepping stone for many of the actors (and work!) [And for the fellas, Sophia, Zoe, Jo etc were pretty gorgeous too].

So, I have no problem if there's a rather hunky (UK) male lead for S10, because, YES, unashamedly, I will be glued to the show. But, in case you think I'm insane, I also enjoy the stories, because (perhaps excluding the end of S9) they're well-written and researched and frankly, plain fun.

British is best! (But you can't have The Ashes)

I hope they try some different ideas:

(a) stop killing off all the major lead characters - a long-running sport and in need of departing from
(b) bring back somebody important like Tom - MacFayden is up to what at the moment? That Pillars of the Earth was a huge yawnfest and it would be good to give him something meaty ...

(a) is what makes Spooks a good TV show, only the frequency of doing it should chance.

(b) MacFayden is currently doing The Three Musketeers in the states I think.

Yes I agree that the frequency of killing off the main characters should change. It wasn't a huge surprise that Lucas left, he had done three series and so was expected, it is about the length of time the characters get.

The whole no-qualms-about-killing-off-main-characters thing is a double edged sword in many ways.

On one hand, it is suspenseful and keeps viewers on the edge of their seats never really sure if a character will make out of a situation alive, it does create real genuine suspense and danger that the character may really die because viewers know the show will have no issues with offing anyone they want.

But on the other hand, the viewers can be disillusioned by this and become detached from the characters, I mean, if no one is safe, if anyone can die in any moment, then why waste time caring or become connected to the characters when they can be taken away at any moment without even showing their fullest potentials?

I think this is the danger that Spooks can be slightly tipping into, that some viewers may think it isn't worth the time to invest in these characters just to see them being cast aside.

It does add to the suspense, and I guess quite a few of us watch it to see "who survives." What's annoying me is that they've done it so much it's predictable - a killer for any series. Give us a series where a main character exits WITHOUT dying.

Not sure I agree with this. People invested in Ros and Lucas despite knowing they'll probably die horribly at some stage... What it does is provide the writers with a challenge to create characters that draws us in despite us knowing they're destined for a terrible fate.

But I do agree that the killing off of the main characters have become a bit blase. We are no longer shocked by it, in fact we now expect it to happen.

I'm not saying that people don't invest in these characters either way, I'm saying that some viewers, a lot of casual viewers, not hardcore fans like us, tend to look at this very differently.

Many friends of mine do watch Spooks, but they hardly care about the characters because as they told me, it's not really worth investing in the characters because since they'll be killed off anyways.

I'm only saying that these are the views that many casual viewers take on.

That is definitely a view my Hubby has, when I complain about the Lucas storyline. His standard reply is 'well what did you expect they always kill off the characters?', usually followed-up with 'I don't know why you watch it when you know they'll all die except Harry'.
So I do think that Spooks is probably better known for killing off the characters than perhaps being a brilliant drama.
